According to the Humane Society your Faux Fur is probably real fur. It is supposed to be fake fur, a cheaper version of the real fur coats. Also people who are for animals rights, tend to buy them. I bet there are a lot of ticked off people at PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) right now!

Due to a loophole in law, fur coats valued at under $150 don't have to have labels explaining what it's made of. China has taken advantage of this law. They use both cats and Raccoon Dogs for the fur. The animals are raised on farms for this and are often skinned alive!

According to the Humane Society, Neiman Marcus, Dillard's and Smartbargains.com are selling Fake Raccoon coats which are made from the Raccoon Dogs. Bergdorf Goodman and Footlocker are selling them as faux Rabbit. These are the brands named by the Humane Society as real fur, Andrew Marc, Michael Kors, Oscar de la Renta, Bogner and Rocawear. They also say that the following companies sell mislabeled faux fur coats. DKNY, Lord and Taylor, Ross, D.E.M.O, Rocawear, Macy's, Baby Phat, J.C. Penney and Burlington Coat Factory.

The Dog and Cat protection act of 2000 banned the use of those types of animals in the United States, for fur coats. However Raccoon Dogs are not protected by this act. The Raccoon Dog is not a true dog but it is related to Dogs. In Japan it's called Tanuki (Badger) they are native to parts of Asia.

They are omnivorous but will eat a lot of different things including frogs, lizards and berries. They are timid and will scream or hide or play dead to avoid a fight with predators. They have burrows and come out mostly at night.

It is ironic that some of the nuts that throw paint on fur coats being worn by people, may be wearing cat fur thinking it's fake. Ok I am against cruelty to animals in any form. And it sickens me to know they get skinned alive, to make coats. But I don't agree with attacking people who wear fur coats and damaging their personal property.

Your fake fur is probably one of these Raccoon Dogs.

OMG - I've just thought about what happened last night when I got the coat out of storage for the first time this winter, my two new cats went crazy about the cuffs! I don't think I can even put it on now, and I have to walk home tonight and it's hit the minus temperatures. I feel quite sick.

I have a winter coat that has "faux fur" collar and cuffs but the label says that it was made in china... could this be real fur? It's currently hung on the back of my chair and I don't even want to touch it.

This is so disgusting. Watching the animal skinned alive was definately the worst thing I have ever seen. I can't imagine why anyone with good sense would do this for money. They have no empathy. Animal abuse should be banned. The US needs to stop supporting this trash and go shut those foreign fur farms down. God is watching us from a distance. If they can't stop the making of furs, at least pass laws so it is done humanely or throw those people in jail.

This is horrible. Those poor animals :( I don't buy anything with real fur or faux fur. I think it looks rather gaudy.

I don't buy anything with fur, real or faux. To me, even wearing faux fur says that you support murdering animals for their fur, because most people won't know if it's real or not, and wearing fur is making a statement, whether you planned on making that statement or not. Those raccoon dogs are beautiful and it's just awful that they are being skinned alive. And cat fur!! People who do horrible things to animals, especially cats, are just awful people. I love my kitten. It makes me want to cry to think about someone wanting her just for her soft fur. I agree that PETA shouldn't go around splattering paint on people's fur coats, though. One, that is destroying someone's personal property, and two, those people have a right to wear fur until at which point it becomes illegal (which I hope it does someday). PETA needs to stop going around acting like an immature child and try to educate people in a more grown-up way. This article would be a great article for PETA to use.

Not that I needed the extra reason - but I am definitely not buying a cheap fur in my lifetime!

Great topic! Isn't it just terrible. I bought my daughter a winter coat recently and it has "faux" fur trim on the hood and we are wondering if it could possibly be real. My 10 year old daughter is TOTALLY against fur coats. PETA is too extreme for me, but I fully support them in this. I saw videos of how they skin these animals alive and it was the worst thing I have witnessed in my life. Just remembering it makes me want to cry. If I buy something that is not label that has real fur I expect that it contain no fur from any animal, domesticated or wild!!
