The Asheville Film Festival has been in operation for four years. It takes place annually in November. A few of the judges include movie critic, Matt Brunson and filmmaker Kristin Hondros. Among many of its awards, The Asheville Film Festival gives out a career achievement award each year to accomplished individuals in the film industry. Academy Award nominated actress Jennifer Tilly is a recipient of this award. She has appeard in numerous films including "The Hunted Mansion" and "Bride of Chucky". The Asheville Film Festival has received great reviews from many film industry professionals including the famous Hollywood actor and producer, Ron Howard. This film festival attracts thousands of attendees, mainly from North Carolina. There are also many visitors who travel to festival from out of town as well.
In 2006, The Asheville Film Festival showed over 80 films. Several of the films shown at the film festival were shot and produced in North Carolina. The Asheville Film Festival screens a great mixture of films including documentaries, shorts, feature films and animated films. This event also hosts many student films. The film "Candy" starring Heath Ledger and Abbie Cornish was screened at The Asheville Film Festival in 2006.
The film festival has also been host to The 48 Hour Film Project, which is held in over 35 cities around the world. In 2006, 33 teams from Asheville, North Carolina competed in The 48 Hour Film Project. The Asheville Film Festival is held at many local venues including the Diana Wortham Theatre. This theater is the premiere performance place in western North Carolina.
The Asheville Film Festival is produced by the City of Asheville Parks & Recreation Cultural Arts Division. It has obtained many mainstream supporters including automobile companies, Buick and GMC. There are many hotels that offer special accommodations to festival visitors including Courtyard by Marriott. Visitors who would prefer a more private atmosphere can go for for local Bed and Breakfasts.
