Independence Day Movie Review
It's July 2nd and giant spaceships are popping up all over the world. What will we do you ask? Simple, we'll call on Jeff Goldblum and Will Smith to show those alien invaders who's boss. What the hell! Lets throw Bill Pullman and Randy Quaid in there too, just to keep those tentacled jerks on their toes. Most movies would have stopped there and had solid hits on their hands, not our summer blockbuster though. They go ahead and toss in Brent Spiner (Data from Star Trek), Judd Hirsch ( Star of the 70's T.V. show Taxi), and Vivica A. Fox. The result you ask, movie history.
Independence Day holds the record for most miniature model work to appear in one film. It is said more miniatures were used in this movie then any other two movies combined. With the rising popularity of CGI after the movie's release, it's unlikely ever to be broken.
Independence Day is one of those increasingly rare movies that people either love or hate. I'm not quite sure why, I've heard critics complain about the lack of exciting dialog. I totally agree the movie's dialog is not very exciting, but either are real life conversations. To give a movie a poor review because it was too realistic is a joke.
Another thing most people who hates this movie will bring up is the scene where Jeff uses his Apple computer to download a virus into the alien mother ship. That is actually a huge plot hole and a justifiable gripe. When you compare that however to anti-gravity (which is also used heavily in the movie) it doesn't seem so unrealistic. I know personally I'd have an easy time explaining away computer connectivity then anti-gravity.
I give this epic entertainment filled gold mine a 9 out of 10
