Goodbye Foley's, Hello Macy’s

That loud gulping noise you hear is probably the nation’s largest department store operator, Federated Department Stores, swallowing the No. 2 department store marketer, May Department Stores in an $11 billion acquisition.

It could also be coming from the legions of shocked shoppers who have fond memories of shopping at their neighborhood Foley's Department Store, which will be converted to Macy’s in the fall of 2006 as a result of the merger.

If not now, soon. Way too soon for some people.

What losing Foley's Department Store means to some

Foley's Department Store is an icon in places like Houston, Texas, where there are 16 out of a total of 69 stores. Most older Houston residents nostalgically recall weekend shopping expeditions where, with or without parents they headed to the downtown Foley's Department Store in pursuit of a special outfit or party dress. At Christmastime, there was always the visit with Santa to look forward to, and checking out all the fun window dressings was a day-long affair.

With the imminent metamorphosis of Foley's Department Stores into Macy’s, those memories may be all that will remain of what was one of the most respected and beloved names in retail. But big mergers are nothing new in the world of retail or any other corporation, and most people take it in stride. What other option do they have, really?

What’s in a name, anyway?

As long as there is a place to shop that offers great styles, good products and affordable prices, does it really matter whether the name emblazoned on the door says Foley's or Macy’s? To many people it does, but mostly from an emotional place rather than from a need-fulfillment place. They feel a certain loss that is likely tied to their fond childhood memories. When the Foley's Department Store they frequented as a child or teenager gets converted into a Macy’s Department store, they may still shop at the “new” store, but in their hearts the place will always be called Foley's.

Did You Know?
When Foley's are converted into Macy's, they will have a store in every major U.S. market.

(continued)Battelstein's, Foley's and many more. Now we have Dillard's and Macy's. I will definitely be patronizing Dillards and other stores like Jos A Banks. By the way, Dillards has indicated their sales are way up since Foley's changed hands. For those of you that miss Foley's -here is an old commercial from the 1980s : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LvUKr9cL08E

I worked for Foley's pre May and post May. Prior to May Co. they were owned by Federated ("old" Federated which took care of their divisions). Foley's was a class act. Fur Salon, Beauty Salon, Restaurants, exclusive designer merchandise, very active in their communities - sponsored the longtime Thanksgiving Day parade in Houston. They took care of their employees, and customers for that matter, like family. May changed them considerably and now they are really bad as Macy's (which pre-Federated Macy's WAS nice as well). I will miss Foley's very much. Every region has lost its identity - California has one choice -Macy's - they did have Robinson's, May Co., I Magnin, The Broadway, Emporium, Weinstocks, Bullocks and Bullocks Wilshire. Macy's gobbled them all up. Florida has Macy's to choose from . They used to have Jordan Marsh, Maas Brothers and Burdines. Macy's gobbled them up. Atlanta has Macy's. They used to have Davison's and Rich's. Houston had Joske's, Sakowitz, Craigs, Walter Pye

Only in the last few years did I discover Foley's (the ladies department in particular). We did not have a Foley's in new Orleans. I love the clothes I was able to find and the prices on them. I was able to find good fitting clothes which was hard for me. I am sad to see them go. Not only that but since Katrina the nearest Macy's to me is permantly closed as well.

Let me tell you about employee morale. I worked in the Mem. City store for two LONG years. Guess what a huge and profitable store like Foley's did for it's LOYAL, longtime employees when they reached the 25 year mark? They got a morning announcement during the pre-opening store meeting (if the employee wasn't there to hear it that shift--too bad), and a SHAMEFULLY CHEAP pen from right off the stationary shelf. SHAMEFUL!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It's not every day that you see an employee make the 25 year mark in retail, and believe me, we were all disgusted by that CHEAP, laughable "thank you for your loyalty" gift from Foley's.

Marsha and Isabell-at the Austin Cosmetic counter. Last week, the store was closing, but these two ladies help my daughter and I find what we needed. They had great personalities and showed outstanding service in the way they took care of us. I hope they will be in the new store. I won't get my cosmetics anywhere but with these two ladies.

True story: I was shopping at the Willowbrook Foley's Men's/Furniture store with my husband and newborn. I talked my husband into trying on a pair that he liked. However, SURPRISE SURPRISE, there was not a Foley's employee in sight. I walked through every nearby department--no help anywhere. Well, I decided to yell "excuse me, can we get some help" into the doorway behind the register, and as soon as I turned around there was a giant, scarey looking man with the tell-tale EMPTY Foley's bag (i.e., obviously undercover security) standing within a foot of me. I asked if he had seen any footwear employees around and he actually grunted what I interpreted as a negative response. YIKES!! He stared at me and my husband the entire time we waited for help. Terrible customer service, and awful security people. Good riddens Foley's!

I agree about Foley's security. Come on now, use as many cameras as you need, but don't HOUND customers while they're shopping (Foley's security folks looked like ex-cons--no offense). Creepy!! Did they want customers to shop in your store? Not subtle at all!! Also, service was rediculous in Memorial City, and the fitting rooms were unuseable because of the urine smell. What was that all about? Gross! Macy's is farrrrr better all around.

I whole-heartedly agree with "bjd" above. The service in Foley's was dreadful!! Even the managers appeared more interested in moving around merchandise than selling it to customers. Also, security is supposed to blend in with the wallpaper, so to speak, but not so at Foley's. They were obviously poorly trained/skilled at Foley's, which was very distracting. I was told by my an acquaintance who worked for Foley's for several years that employee morale was extremely low because they were not treated as assets, but as disposable work-horses. Amazing how backward their employee relations were for such a large company.

Really now......when Foley's took over Sanger Harris THAT was a DREADFUL DAY. Talk about missing a store! Trust me, this will be better. NO MORE RED APPLE DAYS!!! These could be missed, but why so often? Yes, I love sales, but to have them what seemed like weekly, well, in my opinion, it gives a store a bad reputation. Now maybe we can get some better customer service. Hope so, there are LOTS of places to shop these days. Some of us remember GOOD CUSTOMER SERVICE---- let's see, no chewing gum while working, polite salespeople who know their product, friendly salespeople who greet, but don't annoy or follow customers around and, last but not least, let me catch the phone & help someone while I put the in-house customer on hold! What's up with that? Looking forward to change, a Foley's customer

I remember when Foley's was Sanger Harris and I still remember those days shopping the sales with my daughter. Hopefully we will remember Foley's with the same memories.
