Exercise is important, but *where* you exercise is important too. You need to get off that treadmill and go outside to walk. Here's why...

Scenery ~
When you walk outside, instead of inside on a tread mill, you can see the seasons change. You can enjoy the trees and flowers, and the bird and the squirrels. If you live outside the city you may see deer, wild turkeys, opossums that aren't squished yet, and all kinds of other animals enjoying the outside with you. Look up while you walk, and notice the clouds! The scenery is amazing out there. Walk by slowly, and look at it.

Neighbors ~
Do you even know your neighbors? If you get outside and walk around the neighborhood, you will! If you can, arrange to take your walk in the evenings. Make a point of waving and saying 'hi' to anyone you see sitting on a porch or working in the yard. Take the opportunity to start conversations and got to know people. Invite them to walk with you! You could get a whole neighborhood walk together. Just think how friendly that would be. That's must better than a lonely walk on your treadmill in front of the television.

Terrain ~
Even if you have the kind of treadmill that tilts, it's never going to be the same as the true variety of outdoor terrain. You'll get a better workout by going outside and covering naturally occurring hills and valleys. Alter your route from time to time, if you feel like you're not being challenged enough, (or if you're getting too challenged!). Try walking your route in reverse every day or so too. You'll be surprised at how different it can feel.

Fresh Air ~
You're probably cooped up in a house or office all day already. Why spend your exercise time there too? A treadmill indoors is handy if the weather is truly treacherous, but for any other day's conditions, go outside and get some fresh air! Fresh air is good for you, and sunshine has nutrients in it that are important for your body. A lightening storm can be dangerous, but if it's just raining you can still walk outside. Just plan on a warm shower as son as you come back in.

I love walking outside and looking at people's yards and flowers. And the trees in the park, when I have time to get there.

I also prefer outside walking. Inside walking is just boring.

As I was running like a gerbil on my treadmill last night, I was thinking a lot of these things! Really enjoyed your article.

I walk alot when working..in fact some 20 miles a day. So, coming home and doing it...not on my to do list. Although, I do prefer to walk outside on my days off. Good reasoning Susan.
