The local paper where I live runs a weekly poker article written by Daniel Negreanu. Negreanu writes the article each week as if he is an expert at playing poker, especially Limit or No-Limit Hold 'Em Poker.

Negreanu writes the articles as if he is an absolute Poker expert and has all the answers to winning at Poker. How to bet? When to bet? How much to bet? Reading your opponents. It doesn't matter what the Poker topic, he has all the answers to help you win.

Is Daniel Negreanu such a great Poker player that he really does have all the answers he claims to? I decided to check out Daniel Negreanu's statistics to see if he really is a Poker Expert.

Poker players are judged by how many World Series of Poker (WSOP) wins they have. (Each tournament winner is awarded a bracelet, so the number of bracelets you have determines how good you are.) Daniel Negreanu is such an "expert" Poker player that I would have expected him to have won a great deal of these bracelets. You know how many he has? Three! And in the biggest World Series of Poker Tournament, called the Main Event, Negreanu has zero wins! He has never won the biggest Poker Tournament.

Negreanu won his first WSOP tournament in 1998. Since 1998 there have been 249 WSOP Tournaments. So, out of a possible 249 Wins since 1998, Negreanu, the supposed Poker expert with all the answers, has won 3 Tournaments. Three out of 249 possible wins, or just 1.2%. It's possible Negreanu has not played in all 249 Tournaments since 1998. But it's also likley he played in Tournaments prior to 1998, when he won his first. Let's give him the benefit of the doubt and say he played in 200 overall WSOP Tournaments. That bumps his winning percentage up to a whopping 1.5%.

Does a 1.5% winning percentage sound like something an expert in any field should have? One point five percent. C'Mon! If you're going to act like an expert and have all the answers can you please back it up a little!

I agree. Worst article I have ever read. NO idea what you are talking about. Obviously never played a tourney in your life. Its hard enough to beat 20 pepople at your local Casino let alone thousands at the WSOP, most of which are professionals. Doesn't matter how good you are. Daniel has won 4 braceletts and he's only 34. If he gets 4 a decade and plays till hes 64 he will have 16. He is one of the worlds best. Of course poker players don't talk about losses. No-one does!! Imagine a business man " hey I lost 750K on that deal ha ha " never going to happen. If your going to post an article, at least choose a topic you understand.

response to STATSMAN: You are a joke !!! your perspective on Daniels stats are comical & without any thought. Poker players are gaged by Cash winnings,Tournament winnings,Tournamant finale tables,Popularity of T.V. appearances, Lifetime earnings, overall cashes etc... You have no concept of what you wrote judging him by the bracelets won. You disgust me, its obvious that you dislike the guy and chose this forum to bash him! you are probably one of those guys who stays up all night dreaming of what it would be like to make a final table ( at your buddy's $5 tournament buy-in weekly tourney) you probably jock daniels nuts and wish you were like him....POPULAR! you are a weak joke and nothing else. p.s. maybe poker isnt your game...try go fish! andy

I am very eager to disagree with you, so i'm going to ignore reading any of the others comments to check if they have brought up the same points :P First of all, you claimed "Poker players are judged by how many WSOP wins they have" and that "the number of bracelets you have determines how good you are". Where did you get this idea from? You obviously have ignorant ideas about poker, any respected poker player would disagree with you there. Secondly, you explain that Negreanu has only won 3 Bracelets out of a possible 200 WSOP Events, giving him a 1.5% win rate. Then you make out like this is a bad thing. The average WSOP event in 2007 had roughly 1500 entrants, making it a 1 in 1500 chance of winning one, or 0.066%. The fact that Negreanu has won 1.5% of his tourneys at a 0.066% chance is a MASSIVE accomplishment. In my opinion, he is an expert, but rather than go on about my opinion, listen to some facts.. As of January 2007, his total live tournament winnings exceed $9,6

As I read this tripe, I thought surely it was a joke. No one who knows anything about poker could be this stupid. Three WSOP bracelets, at least 17 six-figure cashes, almost $10,000,000 in tournaments winnings, plays in the largest cash games, etc, etc, etc. As to increasing the entry fee, Daniel plays in the highest level cash games, where $10,000 is a "small" bet. Suggesting a tournament with an entry fee of $50,000 or more is understandable in this context. If you believe Daniel is a fraud, can you name a more "successful" poker player? On second thought, don't bother to try. I'm sure your research would, again, be woefully inadequate.

you also need to look at, like negreanu most poker players play other games than NL holdem. Daniel according to a profile i seen on him likes omaha 8 the best. your stats in this article is only about holdem. also...how many people play poker versus how many ever won a bracelet? i think just winning one gives you the right to write any book on strategy.

The author who wrote this article is incredibly uninformed about poker and poker professionals. The better way to analyze this is two fold: 1) how many tournaments has Daniel "cashed" in, meaning how many times has he placed high enough to be in the money during a tournament, and 2)How much money has Daniel netted as a professional poker player. Daniel Negreanu has earned over $10 million dollars through playing poker and has cashed over 20 times in tournaments. This does not even count his earning in cash games. So Mr Author, how much have you earned as a writer? Are you an expert or a fraud? Only you can answer that for yourself. My opinion is that Daniel Negreanu is the real deal brother!! Look at your statistics more carefully before you open your mouth!!

1. Since you (Michael) have never played No Limit Hold'em for money makes you ignorant on the fact to right about it. 2. He writes a poker column because he gets paid from it. Just like any athlete that takes endorsements it is money. 3. You are just a jealous fool that rants on topics that you know nothing about. (By your own admission) Why don't you sit down at a tournament of 50 people and see how well you do. Much less sitting at a tournament of 4000. You need to learn what you are talking about before you comment. How the hell did you get your job? Marry the editor's daughter?
