How to Child Proof Your Bathroom: A Guide for Parents of Toddlers

My parents have been taking in foster children off and on since I was five years old. Over the years I learned there isn't a room that toddlers do not want to play in. Bathroom included. To make your bathroom safe for your toddler you have to use common sense. Look at the contents of your bathroom as something your toddler is going to try to play with. To make your bathroom safe for your toddler you need to check on all the things your toddler can get to. Toddlers seem to have a knack of finding trouble and jumping into it head first. One of the most dangerous rooms in the house is the bathroom. Think about it, what other room has a bowl full of water at just the right height that a toddler can slip into it head first? Not only that, think of how many chemicals are on the shelves and counters of your bathroom.
Below I have listed things you should check when you are toddler-proofing your bathroom and made suggestions for each item.
Toilet
The toilet is not something you can just put away where your toddler cannot get to it. Toilets are in every bathroom and to a toddler they are just another toy. Children don't think about germs. Think of how much fun a toilet appears to a toddler. The toilet is a place where he can fish, he can splash water, he can dunk his toys, he can get a drink, he can wash his face, he can wash his toys, he can make things disappear by pulling the shiny handle and he can dive in and go for a swim all in this bowl of water set down at just his level. As if that wasn't enough fun, think of the fun you will have cleaning up after your toddler once he has discovered the toilet.
Closing the lid to the toilet is the easiest way to keep toddlers out of the toilet. Closing the toilet also keeps the toddler from flushing something down and causing you an unwanted call to the plumber. Remind all family members (and guests) too keep the toilet closed when not in use.
