Bill O'Reilly, the self-proclaimed third most powerful man in America, (behind Bush and Cheney I presume) has recently taken it upon himself to tackle some of the problems that American Kids face today - he's looking out for our kids. I had to do a double-take when I was surfing the web and saw a picture of O'Reilly's mug on the front of his magazine with a caption claiming that he holds the knowledge to "A Survival Guide for America's Families." - Oh, thank heavens.

I looked into it a little further, because frankly it sparked my interest, and I saw that in his syndicated column, Bill had recently denounced Vermont Judge, Edward Cashman, for failing to deliver a proper sentencing to a felon found guilty of attacking his wife with a screw driver. The man got 30 days in the can - then walked free - and later went on to abuse a child.

According to Bill, "Allowing a brutal child molester to walk free while getting 'treatment' is certainly not punishment enough for traumatizing a 4 year old perhaps for life." For the first time ever I whole-heartedly agreed with him, but it didn't take long for him to break this unusual stroke of common sense when he started to speculate about the Shawn Hornbeck case.

Suddenly Bill was a child psychologist, and as he always does, stood firm behind his radical beliefs. Don't let him fool you - there's nothing moderate or traditional about this man.

In case you missed it, Shawn Hornbeck, is the 15 year old boy who was just reunited with his parents after being kidnapped and held captive for 4 years by a child molester. The mystery behind it is that Hornbeck had plenty of opportunities during his captivity to break free but seemingly passed them up, fearful of the repercussions if his attempt failed.

On his #1 rated cable television show (don't ask why, it just is) O'Reilly dissected the situation through an interview format. While responding to questions, O'Reilly brought up the notion that Shawn might have enjoyed his 4 year stint with his abuser and that's why he passed up any opportunities to escape. Wait a second, who's looking out for our kids?

oops...I hope it's obvious I didn't intend to imply that elizabeth smart's experience was a falsity, rather the falsity is as laszlo reported the story below.

really good article. i can't believe I didn't hear about this previously--but i do make a splendid effort to ignore this most insufferable man. Below I alluded to the complete falsity of elizabeth smart's experience, and I have since responded to an email that laszlo wrote to me. the events of elizabeth smart's kidnapping ordeal and subsequent return are well documented. She too suffered from the same type of similar stockholm syndrome-esque experience, and was finally found walking along state street in sandy utah with her captors, in response to 911 calls from passing motorists. She never told anyone her identity as laszlo asserts, and continued to deny her name for a short time, even after being found.

laszlo--elizabeth smart never did any such thing, in fact, she continued to evade detection even while sitting in a police car after being discovered. were you being sarcastic?

O'Reilly is the head mistress of the media whores. I can't stand him claiming his show has no spin, when really it just has no intelligence. I can respect someone who plays devil's advocate, by Billy Boy does so without any goal of objectivity in his mind. The fact is that this kid was confused, and even a trained psychologist, which Bill is not, would have trouble understanding what was going on in his brain during this time. Bill lacks respect for this sort of situation, just like his whole ambulance chasing network does for pretty much everything. It doesn't affect me, but it saddens and frustrates many of us because it is a waste of time and money by the press. Shame on you, Bill.

For those who agree with what Billo said and who criticize people who hate the man for his ugly zealotry, do you still agree with him now that he's denying what he earlier said? My suspicion of Billo for a very long time is that he really doesn't know what he's talking about -- and he just admitted it. He's pathetic and I feel sorry for him.

Your degree should be in BS not BA. It's convenient for you to write these opinions and totally neglect what had happened to Elizabeth Smart. Who at first opportunity didn't waste time telling someone who she was when she and her captors were in a store. Bill is right, sorry.

Whatever else you can say about O'Reilly, the man makes you think. Love him or hate him, he exposes other sides of stories to the light.

Bill only says what he says on his program to get a reaction or a certain answer from the person he's talking to on the show. If you pay attention he sometimes asks a question then a few minutes later he takes the opposite side. Watch the Danny Devito clip from a few months back on youtube for a perfect example. One minute he's asking how it can happen and then the next he's taking Danny's side. I wouldn't pay attention to anything he says on tv, its just for ratings.

Somebody needs to put Bill into captivity with a few known sodomists and let's see howlong it takes him to get out for fear of his life-betcha he'd really enjoy that!

Terrific article! I agree with Rachel Storey's comment, but another MO of Bill's is to say many of the things that most people think, at least initial, BUT THEN DISMISS AS IMMATURE, VINDICTIVE, OR SALACIOUS. It's NOT that we don't have the guts to say it--it's that most people use more than their reptilian brain to actual respond to a topic. There is usually a small kernal of truth to what he says (probably explaining much of his popularity). He is like a bright 14-year-old who has the smarts but not the maturity to see the whole truth; he misses the 'grays' and likes to view most things as black and white. Despite my liberal leaning, I have agreed w/ Bill at times in the past (certainly not a 'billo' hater), but these types of comments show his true colors. They'd be entertaining if he weren't so popular--which is a rather frightening fact. I also agree with Jeff Musall about O'Reilly and the topic of sex -- which makes you believe that Andrea Mackris was certainly not lying, o

Of course he's now denying that he said any of that. It's the Bill O'Reilly MO: "Inflame then deny." When is he going to figure out that this crazy digital recording thing makes it possible for people to PROVE that he really said what he said?

Posted on 03/22/2007 at 9:03:00 AM

Have to agree, I usually agree with O'Reilly, but I was thinking the same thing when I listened to him spout off with implications about the boys step-father, and his home life, etc...

Posted on 03/22/2007 at 2:03:00 AM

I can't stand to watch the man, let alone listen to all of the half-truths and outright lies that, somehow, turn over high ratings. O'Reilly, Povich, Springer...neither one of those birds take a dime out of my pocket and I don't plan to pay them anytime soon. Insightful article, by the way. Good job.
