Optimistic
Employers hate pessimists, despite how riotously humorous some of them can be. Yes, griping can be a bonding factor, but mostly it just gets everybody down. Work on becoming a hopeful, helpful, glass-half-full type. Not the sickeningly syrupy impossibly optimistic sort. Just the kind that looks for opportunities and makes the best of every situation. Such a great personality not only draws people to the great feelings you create, but it also makes you more confident. And that never fails to make you more valuable and desirable in any interview.
Passionate
Show 'em what gets you really going. Chances are you'll be able to get them excited about it too. Your unique abilities and passions are quite probably yours alone, which gives you unique edge. At the same time, focus the attention of the interview on past projects and responsibilities that get you excited. Believe me, doing so will instantly improve your ability to sell yourself and your experience to a hiring manager.
Appropriate
Focus on becoming sensitive to the moods, needs, and emotional tempo of the company. Managers deeply appreciate people who always seem to know the right things to say, the proper way to act, and the time to be a certain way. Mostly it's common sense. But for some people it can take a real attitude shift. Check your feelings and personal life at the door. This is a time to be the consummate pro, the guy for all seasons. Your great attitude is highly valued and easy to spot in a job interview.
Respectful
No, you don't have to speak in reverent, fearful tones in a job interview. That can make your potential boss just as uncomfortable as if you were too comfortable and casual. Seek a great balance by treating the interviewer like a potential collaborator -- someone who is above you, but a close part of the same team.
