Temporary henna tattoos are a great substitute for permanent tattoos for many reasons. Although only temporary, henna tattoos still last for about three weeks. Since henna tattoos are temporary, they can be changed depending on the wearer's current mood, significant other, or time of the year.Authentic henna temporary tattoos are safe. Allergic reactions are the only possible side effect with genuine henna tattoos. However, allergic reactions to henna tattoos are extremely rare and the reactions are usually mild. Henna tattoos pose no risks of hepatitis, AIDS, and the other health risks associated with traditional tattoos.
However, serious dangers exist when so-called "black henna" is used for tattoos. Natural henna isn't black in color. Henna has a red cast. Black henna tattoos consist of a chemical called para-phenylenediamine. Para-phenylenediamine is used to dye hair black.
Para-phenylenediamine is an allergen. Just like other allergens, such as bee stings, people react differently. Some have a strong or even dangerous reaction the very first time that they are exposed. Others may have a mild reaction or none at all, but become sensitized after several exposures.
Once you become sensitized to PPD, the allergy is permanent. In fact, the sensitivity to para-phenylenediamine can cause allergic reactions to similar stimulants. Common items such as black clothing, makeup, and sunscreens could also start to cause allergic reactions. Other products that you will have to avoid if you become sensitized to para-phenylenediamine are hair dyes and benzocaine. Ask your doctor for a complete list.
The side effects from PPD black henna tattoos can be very serious. They can range from itching of the skin to death. PPD black henna tattoos can cause blisters, hives, swelling, and weeping sores. People have gotten permanent scars on their skin from PPD black henna tattoos. The effects don't become apparent immediately. The reaction starts in about three days and can take up to ten days.
