There's good news and there's bad news for people who desire to burn fat around the stomach. The bad news is that, while we can choose which muscles we tone, we can't dictate where we will lose weight. So no matter how many crunches you do, you aren't going to get the six pack of abs that you desire if you haven't lost the weight. The good news is that reducing belly fat is no harder than losing any other weight if you follow these four rules.

1. Instead of focusing on toning your abs, focus on losing weight with an aerobic workout. Find something you enjoy doing, whether it is popping in a DVD with the latest cardio routine or taking a jog through your neighborhood. Even adding a walk in the evenings or taking the stairs instead of the elevator will help you burn calories and lose weight.

2. Do strength training for your whole body. Although targeting your abs exclusively won't work, strength training for your whole body will help you burn fat and gain muscle. Focus on a different muscle group each day you do a strength training routine. Don't forget to schedule a day or two to rest. Your muscles need the time off so that they can grow. Developing your muscles is one of the best ways to burn fat.

3. Reducing belly fat is not simply a matter of exercise. Diet is the other half of the weight loss equation. Don't get caught up in a complicated diet that leaves you frustrated and hungry. The easiest way to make sure you are eating healthy is to replace processed foods with whole foods. Say goodbye to fast food and the empty calories from cookies, crackers, and potato chips. Instead, fill up with fruits and vegetables. Focus on eating nutrition dense food. You will be less hungry and your body will have the energy it needs to exercise. Although you want to cut saturated fats as much as possible, be sure to include some healthy fats, such as those from avocadoes, walnuts, and flax seeds, into your diet.

Instead of soda pop, try a glass of water with some lemon added for taste.
