If I said King or Wes Craven, you would undoubtedly know who I was talking about. Did you know there are great authors out there that get published from small presses that are as good or better than the authors who's book you see on the shelves of Borders and Barnes & Noble?

Brian Keene has written some of the most outstanding horror novels I've had the pleasure of reading. His books include, Ghoul, Clickers II: The Next Wave who he co-wrote with J.F. Gonzalez, City Dead, The Rutting Season and Conqueror Worms. His writing is unlike anything I've read and will capture your attention from the very first page. The cool thing about getting books from small presses is you might find deals you wouldn't be able to find otherwise. Like if you order one of these books from Clarkesworld books, you can have it autographed at no additional cost.

James Newman is a nice guy that chats with readers and fans in many forums on the net. When was the last time you were able to chat with Stephen King on a forum message board? James Newman is by far the best Horror author the small presses are publishing. His first Mass Market publication Midnight Rain, is my favorite out of the books he's written so far. His other books include, Wicked, Love Bites (Chapbook) and The Church of Dead Languages (Chapbook) who was co-written with Jason Brannon. This is one author we should keep an eye on, his writing style, wonderful characters and vivid imagination are going to propel him right on the shelves of book stores everywhere.

Tim Lebbon writes dark twisted and brilliant stories. If you've never heard of him, here's your chance to do yourself a favor and look his works up. Some of his novels include, Dawn, Berserk, Desolation, Face, and Changing of Faces. If you like dark, terrifying reads this is the author you should find, just don't read them at night because you never know when the lights might mysteriously go off. You don't wanna suddenly be sitting in a dark room after reading his book.

Thanks for the suggestions. I love to read just about anything by anybody as long as it looks good, but horror, thrillers and suspense are my favorite genres. I will definitely give each of these a good look and hopefully find my next great book to curl up with this weekend.

Thank you both for your comments. I've been thinking of doing a few book reviews, we will see. ;)

Thanks, Mary... I love horror and there is such a lack - it seemed to me. Now I can look up these authors and find a new source of cherished fear and dread. I am a shy grandma type and people often ask how I can read "that stuff" - but after 10 years of domestic violence and 8 years of George Bush, horror is in the eye of the beholder!

Have never noticed publishers and am not guided by Best Seller lists. I browse, a title grabs my attention, I read the jacket to see what the story is. Then I read the first few paragraphs. After reading the book, I read about the author. If I liked the style of writing, it is what motivates me to find more books by the author. Some of my favorite books have been published by small companies. Book reviews also pique my interest in a particular book or author. So write us some reviews!

Thanks Michy. I really want people to know what they are missing by not looking at the small press publishers.

totally agree with this - and the abstract comment is soooo true. Some of the best books on the market are with the small little known publishers. This was a great find!

Thank you Donna. I love Vampire stories too, they're great!

This genre is one of my favorites, especially anything to do with Vampires. I appreciate your suggestions and the entertaining way you have written about this subject.

Well, ninigurl, you're in luck. These small press publishers also have mysteries and other genres. Thanks for the comments.

Great article Mary. Although I am not a reader of Horror stories, I do enjoy good thriller-mysteries. I have enough nightmares to deal with that I don't want to add to them. LOL
