‘ I don't care if it's too damn late! I ain't gonna sit next to some stranger on a five hour plane! You gotta change may seat!'.A shrill voice filled a particular departure lounge in the Nice Airport. Following it was the crashing sound of a gigantic limb that pounded on the podium before it. The tranquility that had once permeated every crevice of the sun-filled room abated, and a familiar feeling of apprehension arose above the silence that followed the commotion. Tactless American mayhem was about to commence.A plethora of ‘mon dieus' erupted in unison. Askance glares were being shot at the tactless woman. No one could fathom what compelled her to change the seating arrangements of her entire family and herself when we were about to be shuttled off to the awaiting plane.Across from the generously proportioned woman sat I, unscathed by the ordeal but perturbed none the less. I had never dreamed that I would see the famous cliché in action, but there it was before me. With all of the attention being focused on the podium, no one in the room noticed that I, too, was American but was a living example that not all of us acted in such a manner.

This GIRL seems way too full of herself. If you look at her credentials, she's attended a preppy school (hence the arrogance-saturated tone), and the only reason she's studied in Europe and Africa is because more than likely she did it through mommy-and-daddy-sponsored study abroad programs through her university (which the uncouth American dollars paid for). I do agree with her argument that one can not generalize an entire country with one or two words, or in a "linear way". I also agree that the majority of the world does see us as "uncouth". But I do not agree with the pompous, nose-in-the-air attitude she's poisoned her article with. She puts herself above all the "average Americans", placing herself on an unattainable pedastal perched in the south of France. Grow up girl and lose the attitude!

Well, this person surely has many years of experience... I mean, she is a whopping 21 years old. Don't apologize for me, don't assume I am ignorant just because I am an American. Glad you mentioned the lady was "portly"... Glad your chat was in Spanish "of course"... My Dad was a blue collar worker all his life, loud and boisterous, opiniated too. Guess what? He spoke eight, yes 8, languages. We are not nearly so ignorant or ill informed as you would have us believe. You seem to be apologizing, please don't. And to Jo Ann who has to laugh about "is it safe here".. perhaps she should get another job. Most Americans simply cannot take time off their job to take a vacation, and when they do they want to know all they can. And to Laure, aren't you yourself furthering that stereotype, implying Americans go to Europe only to look for McDonalds??? PLEEZE! Remember, LA is not the "real" America... get thee to Iowa and learn something!

Stereotypes have a lot of meat to them, don't they? As much as we would like to deny the Ugly American, there are way too many of them. It is both wrenchingly sad and utterly hilarious to see Ugly Americans reeling through the great cities of Europe looking only for a McDonald's.

Unfortunately the only view the world has about Americans is that we're all uncouthed and look for things that we have "back home" Im an American working in the states for an Asian carrier and Id be a millionaire for all the passengers asking me "Do they speak English there?" or Is it safe. I have to laugh about the "is it safe" comment when the pasengers are calling me from Detroit, Washington or NY.
