A Circumcised Penis is Not Necessarily Cleaner

Another So-called Benefit that is Actually a Crock

Circumcision is said to promote good penile hygiene, but even a circumcised man has to wash his willy if he wants to avoid infection. The myth that circumcision is cleaner comes from the fact that a substance can accumulate beneath the foreskin. This is called smegma, which is wrongfully considered unclean. Fresh smegma is very clean, a combination of oils, dead skin, and antibodies. The foreskin is believed to provide an ideal environment for bacteria colonization, but the antibodies in fresh smegma actually prevent this from occurring.

When smegma is allowed to accumulate unchecked, this can be unclean and unhealthy. Any penis that is not appropriately washed is at risk of infection. Dirt and bacteria can collect under the foreskin just as it can collect on the scrotum or pubic hair. Simply rinsing your penis in warm water can eliminate the build-up and destroy a lot of the germs that may be hiding out there. It is true that if an intact man does not wash his penis, he is inviting infection, but this is true of any man who does not appropriately bathe. Good hygiene is crucial for the health of every person in this world.

Researchers have tried to prove that the foreskin provides a way for germs causing UTI, HPV, HIV, and various other ailments to invade. The truth is that these things can be absorbed through membranes in the penis, foreskin or not. The studies done have been flawed at best, and most medical organizations agree that the data is inconclusive to proclaim that circumcision has any disease-preventing benefits. People have tried to say that circumcising a penis makes it easier to keep clean, decreasing risk of infection. There is little evidence to support this, but surmounting evidence that proves it false.

Takeaways
  • The foreskin remains closed around the glans for the first few years of life.
  • A circumcised infant is harder to keep clean than an intact boy.
  • The circumcision site needs to be kept clean throughout life, just like the foreskin.
Did You Know?
The substance that collects under the foreskin, called smegma, is actually very clean--unless allowed to accumulate for weeks and weeks unchecked. In short, wash your penis if you don't want an infection. Mutilating it is pointless.

It decreases the man's risk of contracting it from a partner, but it increases his risk of passing it on to other partners once he contracts it. If circumcision did such wonders for HIV I doubt our HIV rate would be so high here in America where circumcision is also so common.

I haven't decided whether I'm for or against yet, but I do think uncirc look funny to me. The only one's I've seen are all circ'ed penises. However, as far as cleanliness is concerned on the wikipedia article on circ it says that studies show that circumcision does lower the risk of HIV transmission in penile/vaginal sex. Just a thought that may provide some more info. on whether or not its right/better. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Circumcision

You're right about pride in most cases, but it's not true of all men as many circumcised men do accept what they have lost including the sexua aspect. I sell intactivism from every angle and appreciate your advice, but do not downplay my opinion because I am a woman. Women are affected by circumcision by having sex with men, circ'd or intact, by having to make a choice about their own sons, by having to deal with regret if they do make the choice to circ teir son or with nonacceptance if the chose intact. More importantly we know PLENTY about this issue because or sexual parts, our genitalia, our vaginas are intact, natural, and uncut and so we therefore knwo what it's like to NOT have them screwed around with unlike circumcised men. Never underestimate women's perspectives on this. I have had PLENTY of luck convincing both men and women alike against circ, an moreover, you forget that women have as much to say about parental decisions for their kids as men and are more likely to sway

I'm a circ'd male & will not circ my sons because its not necessary. I've read your comments on the issue & though I agree with your stance I'd like to point out that the WORST way to promote awareness to men is for a WOMAN to be the informer. Also - 2 things: You igonore the fact that the whole idea of circ came from religion, & you can't condemn something that's foundational to another's faith. Routine circ, yes.

Second, don't try to "sell" the idea of uncirc as BETTER because it threatens circ men (understandably). The ONLY card to play is the UNNECESSARY card. Stick to cold facts that repudiate the pro-circ info. Not opinions - especially women's. The "he'll make a better lover" one is a BAD idea. You can't convince a man you've just told is IMPAIRED sexually that uncirc is best - he'll rebel out of pride. Concentrate on your DELIVERY, not just your stance.

I definitely agree that too much penis washing is as bad as too little!

You are under the heavy influence of the personal hygeine industry. The penis that is too often washed loses its natural ability to fight off infection. The billions of people in india and china without the benefit of an affordable water supply do a good job of producing healthy children without constantly washing their private parts. The only time I wash mine is if it smells from the chemical side effects that my cholesterol medication produces.

Attn readers: if you think it's ridiculous and have a different opinion about circumcision, please explain why with some facts and sources to back them up. Otherwise there's no point in making a negative remark, because it just makes YOU look foolish.

Great info Heather! my uncirced boys are very clean and easy to care for =) =)

I agree, Jen. A lot of parents chose to circumcise because they think keeping the intact penis is such a difficult and time-consuming tact OR because they understand it only takes a QUICK SWISH but don't trust their sons to be mature and responsible enough to wash their penises once a day. It is really ridiculous that penile cleanliness is even an issue. Men are capable of washing up.

Another good article. I'm think it's awesome you used the word "willy" in an article!! **laughing**

Seriously, do men have such a hard time remembering to wash their genitals that such information is warranted? Ha Ha Ha Ha. Good stuff, Heather. Amusing.
