Given the some "stinky" start to the recycling movement, how, then, is recycling justified?

This article will deal with the justifications of recycling from the environmental point and view, and how its intended ramifications may have not have been what the environmentalists will readily admit.

1. Recycling of Paper Saves Rainforests

It has been purported that using fresh paper derived from trees logged from virgin forests has been one of the major factors behind deforestation.

Deforestation is caused by the stripping of trees in forested habitats. The ill-effects of deforestation can be detrimental to the ecology of forests and jungles: Because various flora and fauna depend upon the rainforests of the world in a intricate series of food webs, deforestation, it is argued, will endanger many species of creatures that inhabit these rainforests.

Recycling, it seems, helps reduce our dependency on logging from virgin forests. The farming of trees, too, helps further reduce the burden on rainforests as a continuous source for logs.

Critics, however, charge that recycling paper produces more hassle than it is worth. Because paper can only be recycled 4-6 times, most recycled paper require additional wood fiber from virgin pulp derived from trees to strengthen the paper for normal usage, which in enhance defeats the purpose of recycling in the first place.

The processes and treatments required to process recycled paper are far more complex than manufacturing paper straight from virgin pulp. The resultant waste material created from recycling paper, which includes toxic chemicals, have to be dumped in landfills.

In short, recycling paper is not only self-defeating, it simply is an add-on burden to the process of manufacturing paper. Not only is more energy and money expended on the needless expertise, more waste and pollutants are created as a result of the recycling process. Not a very comforting thought.
