It is a fact that so many more people need to be aware of. Chemical birth controls can cause an abortion early in pregnancy, often before the mother even knows she's conceived. We are made aware of the effects on our body from birth control, but how aware are we of the in's and out's of how these chemicals work to prevent a pregnancy?

Will birth control make me fat? Can I take the pill while smoking? Will I get headaches? How will this birth control affect my libido? These are the general thoughts and questions people have when asking their doctor for a prescription for birth control. The real questions we should be asking are how it works, and if the method you are choosing does in fact have a chance of aborting a fertilized egg. Many of us are against abortion, but how pro-life does that make us? If we agree that life begins at conception, birth control ends millions of lives each year. Chemical abortions are estimated to kill more than 7 million babies a year while surgical abortions are estimated at only 1.5 million babies. That is such a grave number that we need to get the word out on the real effects of chemical birth control.

All chemical birth control methods work in the same manner. This includes the pill, the patch, Nuva ring, depo-provera and Norplant. There are several other types of chemical control, but these are the most popular. They work by doing 4 different things to a woman's reproductive system. The first effect is ovulation suppression, this means one of the hormones in the birth control works to prevent ovulation. If an egg is not release, conception can not occur, and no pregnancy is taken place. The second effect of the chemicals is to thicken the woman's cervical mucous to make it more difficult for the sperm to enter the uterus. If the sperm cannot enter the uterus it cannot gain access to the egg and no conception can occur. The third effect is an abortion causing effect, the chemicals prevent the cilia of the fallopian tubes to move the egg down to the uterus. Since an egg may be fertilized in the fallopian tube, these babies are often stuck in the tubes and receive no nourishment which results in their death.

I find it amazing that so many people don't even realize this. While I'm ultimately prochoice for "other women" for myself personally there is something unsettling about hormonal bc, and part of the reason is that it is not completely effective in preventing fertilization, and I'm not even Christian or "religious" but it is just a personal preference. Unfortunately, as you mentioned, the medical community does not publicize this type of information because their customers that are uncomfortable with abortion would also forgo hormonal bc if they knew this. For me, "birth control" means keeping the egg and sperm separate to the greatest extent possible, not simply preventing implantation of a fertilized egg.
