Georgia Wakes Up to Blanket of Snow, Winter Weather on March 1

Some Middle Georgia Students Get a Day Off from School

On February 28, 2009, I read the weather forecast on Yahoo for the following day in my little town of Yatesville, Georgia. Weather predictions for the following day called for snow up to three inches. Yeah, right. How can the middle Georgia weather go from the upper 60s one day to snow the next? Once again, Mother Nature fooled us Georgians by blanketing middle Georgia with snow today, March 1, 2009.

With visions of another unusually warm day dancing in our heads here in middle Georgia, my family awoke to the shocking sight of snow falling from the sky on Sunday, March 1, 2009. Around 11:30 a.m. that morning we opened the front door and there it was, sheets of snow coating the Georgia pines. Huge snowflakes were storming through the wind and soon the ground was as white as a polar bear's coat. While not exactly a snow storm in the minds of northern folks, we Georgians liken it to a hallowing blizzard! What a shocking blow to our middle Georgia daffodils, peach trees and forsythia bushes that have been in full bloom.

By 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, March 1, 2009, in Yatesville, Georgia, we decided that we should take the trip to our local Walmart to stock up on bread and sundries. We southerners tend to panic at the first sight of snow and our first reaction is to hit the grocery stores. On the drive to Thomaston, Georgia, the snow was descending from the sky so hard we could barely see. Along the way, we passed two trees that had already faltered under the weight of the snow. We had the foresight to bring our cameras to capture the rare beauty of the Georgia snow.

It was evident that everyone else in middle Georgia was also in panic mode and the stores were packed with folks buying bread and milk like there was no tomorrow. We checked Walmart and Home Depot for space heaters, just to find that they had all been sold out or put back into stock due to the warm weather. By the time we departed Walmart and swung by KFC for our Sunday fried chicken, the snow was at least two inches thick in Thomaston, Georgia.
