In Dayton, Ohio, 12 Pit Bulls were seized after raids by police. The county ordered the 12 dogs to be put to death on the advice of Mark Kumph, Director of the animal shelter. Kumph stated that some of the dogs attacked employees and all of them were extremely agressive towards other animals and staff. The Montgomery County Animal Shelter were holding the dogs which were to be used in evidence against five men facing felony dogfighting charges. The Attorney who represents two of the defendents in the dogfighting case, John Rion, has stated that the owners could file a civil lawsuit over the decision to euthanize the animals by unauthorized taking of property. The Attorney did not confirm if his clients intended to do so. The county has been holding the dogs since raids by the animal center in Dayton since July to October of this year.
Furthmore, the county has estimated that a total of $60,000 has been spent to date in caring for the 12 dogs that were put to death. The actual total of euthanizing each dog is approximately $5.00. The ongoing fight between police, animal rescue shelters and people who use animals for dogfighting is a daily one. This cruel sport must be stopped in order to prevent this happening again.
