There have been many traditions that continue each year in honor of Saint Patrick, the Patron Saint of Ireland. Saint Patrick's is commemorated each year around the world on March 17. March 17 is the day Saint Patrick died in the year 461 at the age of 76.Saint Patrick's Traditions
Shamrocks
Those who are of an Irish descent wear a sprig of shamrock on their lapels. This tradition of the Irish dates back to the explanation that Saint Patrick gave to the High King of Tara. Saint Patrick grabbed a stalk of shamrock from the ground as he explained that it was one stem on the plant and the three branches of the leaf represents the Blessed Trinity.
Wearing of the Green
The tradition of the wearing of the green is associated with the color of the shamrock. However, the tradition today is that you wear green or you will be pinched.
Saint Patrick's Day Parades
Saint Patrick's Day Parades have been a long standing tradition dating back to 1737. The first parade took place in Boston, Massachusetts.
Eat, Drink and Be Jiggy
On March 17, this is the largest day of consumption of corned beef and cabbage. Traditionally, corned beef and cabbage are chased down with a lager of cold beer.
Irish Dances
It is a tradition in Ireland that there is Irish Dancing in the clubs and pubs. In traditional United States Saint Patrick Day Parades, you will find Irish dance troops amongst the parade participants.
Saint Patrick Day Movies
Traditional Saint Patrick Day movies such as the "Quiet Man" starring John Wayne and Maureen O'Hare are shown on Irish television and on various United States television channels. Three other popular Saint Patrick Day movies are "Darby O'Gill and the Little People," "Into the West," and "The Leprechaun."
The Liquid Green
Many cities dye their local rivers green in celebration of Saint Patrick's Day. Last but not least, the drinking of green beer is drank to finish the day of celebration.
Saint Patrick Day Decorations
The most common decorations for Saint Patrick's Day are shamrocks, leprechauns, pots of gold, and green derby style hats.
