For most individuals, using a credit card is a common practice and most don't think twice about the security involved in the transaction. However, there are thieves and scammers everywhere that are looking to steal and defraud an individual's identity every opportunity they get. Also, with the emergence of online banking, savvy hackers are also intent on obtaining our private financial information. The tactics used by identity thieves range from the simple to the complex, and it's critically important that you're aware of the different methods so you can drastically reduce the risk of your identity being stolen. Here are just a few ways the scammers will try to nab your identity, as well as other credit information:

Stealing your information over the phone.

One of the most common ways that an individual has their identity stolen is over the telephone. Many identity victims have stated that when they call a "company" to purchase something they saw on the internet they gave out their credit card information over the phone. Many e-commerce sites offering a product are, in fact, false advertisements and their sole purpose is to have visitors from the site call in with their private financial information. Within days the scammer maxes out the credit cards, and the victim is left spending valuable time and money to get the scam rectified. My suggestion here is to be cautious about what you say over the telephone. Being that the telephone is an impersonal method of communication, it's difficult to differentiate a scammer from a genuine business entity. You must do extensive research about the company first before you make the phone call. It's important to know exactly who you're talking to before you give them financial information.

Stealing your information from old receipts.

This is an excellent story. I have earned rewards that I never even knew I had coming. That somebody else claimed. It involved alot of money. And The people who stole it would probably finish me off before they would let me claim it.
