Choosing Not to Vaccinate?

A growing number of parents today are choosing not to vaccinate their children. While this seems risky and uncertain to many, these parents insist that they are doing the safest thing for their children. What are the reasons behind the trend to delay or skip vaccines all together, and is
 it legal?

For most parents it is a common part of the routine doctor visits. At two months, four months, six months, and so on babies are taken in to be weighed, measured, and injected with vaccines that their parents and their doctors believe will save these children from lifelong pain and suffering or worse at the hands of disease. For many there is simply no question about receiving the shots. A slight fever, a sore muscle at the injection site, and a cranky baby are all the outward signs that most will notice in relation to the vaccine, which to many is far better than the possible effects that the diseases could cause. Images of the old black and white photos of polio victims lying out in iron lungs flash through our minds at the idea of not vaccinating our children, quickly persuading us to squash any ideas of skipping those necessary shots.

And yet more and more parents today are doing their own research when it comes to vaccines and choosing not to proceed with the routine injections. Rather than solely taking the word of doctors and the vaccine industry they want to know the effects and the risks themselves. Parenting sites all across the web are hosting discussions on vaccines, books such as Just A Little Prick by Peter and Hilary Butler that explain vaccines are gaining notice, and newspapers are finding themselves looking for information as Texas lawmakers put vaccines in the headlines. In today’s information age it almost seems outdated not to be as knowledgeable as possible on the many areas that affect our children’s lives. Parents today want as much information as possible in order to make the best choices for their children, even if their choice goes against conventional thinking.

disease-causing agents every day through breathing and eating than they would ever be exposed to in a vaccine. Each vaccine we give is only 0.5 mL (about a tenth of a teaspoon) of fluid. Often, too, as far as children developing problems subsequent to vaccinations-often that's more likely due to temporal association than direct causation. For instance, SIDS death rates are highest during the first 6 months of life-regardless of vaccination status. I'm always suspicious when a parent claims "vaccines did my child irreparable harm" because you have to wonder if it was really the vaccine, or if it was just that the parent, being understandably devastated, was looking for something to blame and the vaccine happened to be convenient.

To clarify a couple of things: 1) It wasn't infection rates that were decreasing as a result of improved sanitation. Rather, it was death rates from the infections. Infection rates only decreased with the introduction of vaccines. 2) It is true that often during an outbreak, more children who became sick were vaccinated than not vaccinated. However, this is due at least in part to the fact that there are more vaccinated children than not vaccinated. If you look at it proportionately, of the number of children who are vaccinated, only a small proportion of those children become ill, whereas of those who are not vaccinated, a much larger proportion become ill. 3) Vaccines are continually monitored for safety, and there are some (such as the whole-cell pertussis and oral polio vaccines) that have been pulled due to safety concerns. Parents are informed when they vaccinate that they need to call if there are any serious reactions. 4) Children are exposed every day to more disease-c

I have a five year old son that developed a neurological disorder after having his one year old shots. He became deaf too. We have just had our second child and will absolutely never vaccinate this one. It has been a long hard road with the first.

Great article and excellent discussions to read here too...

All anyone needs to do is actually read the package inserts. The listed side effects in Merck's MMR, for example, include deafness, arthritis, diabetes, and death.

Great article. I did not have my sons vaccinated at all. I do homeschool, but every state has a religious exemption to vaccinations if you don't want to do it. Many states give exemptions for non-religious reasons as well.

WOW, Rebecca, we agree on something. :)

A lot of the children getting the diseases are the ones who are vaccinated, which means that they are getting it from the vax OR that the vax isn't effective. The number of people contracting the diseases and dying from them was rapidly decreasing BEFORE vaccinations were created. Better sanitation and germ awareness are quite effective at preventing illness. I looked at pros and cons, risks and benefits, and gave my son the safest shots that protected against the most dangerous things. Prevnar for example is pretty safe, but doesn't protect against but a few strains of pneumoccocos and there are hundreds. But with my husband almost dying 2x of pneumonia I let my son have Prevnar anyway. It has to be evaluated case by case, individually.

Rebecca, Actually I'm fairly certain my dd had a negative reaction to the chicken pox vaccine. She was never sick at all until she was 17 months old, she spiked a few within days of getting the varicella vaccine. I didn't report it because her pediatrician assured me the vaccine was not the cause because she would have had a reaction within 24 hours. Too coincidental that her first illness occurred within a few days of this vaccine particularly when she had never been sick before.

I agree with you now Rebecca, and I wish I had investigated the issue a bit more heavily. If I had, I would have definitely been on a delayed vax schedule, and I wouldn't not have vaccinated for everything they offer. Chicken pox, please. I have yet to know anyone who died of chicken pox, and I grew up in a time when I and most of my peers had chicken pox. I would have also sought out and paid any amount for single-dose vaccines. We currently don't vax and have found a wonderful pediatrician who actually doesn't vax unless the parent requests it.
