Saving money on groceries and food consumed in the home is one of the biggest ways to improve budgets and cut expenditures. The key to saving money on groceries and food is to plan ahead and organize. Groceries are literally dumped into the trash as waste because of improper planning and organization.

Check Expiration Dates and Re-Organize Cabinets

The first step in saving money on groceries and food is to go through your cabinets and refrigerators. Check the product dates on all items. Arrange consumables with the closest expiration date in the front of cabinets, refrigerators and freezers. Products that expire in three days would be near the front while products that expire in three months would be closer to the back.

Move foods that are opened and often wasted to the refrigerator. Many products, such as breads, have an increased shelf life if they are refrigerated after opening. The average household throws away 14% of the food that they purchase. Cutting down food thrown away can significantly decrease the cost of groceries and food.

Plan Menus

Organization is the key to saving money on groceries and food. Having a menu planned will enable buyers to purchase only the items that are needed and decrease food waste. After menus are planned, write a list of ingredients needed to prepare meals. Check cabinets, refrigerators and freezer. Mark off the items already in stock in the kitchen. Make sure to plan menus that will use items that are close to expiration dates. With the kitchen already organized, it will be easy to spot which products need to be consumed the most.

Create A Shopping List

Consumers spend a great deal of time shopping for a home or a car. Even with busy schedules, it is imperative to create a shopping list. Savings on groceries and food will increase if a shopping list is created prior to the trip to the store. A great deal of money is being spent on groceries and food, planning for this expenditure is important.
