Freshwater Access on the Cahaba River in Alabama

The Cahaba River has one reservoir that it feeds, making up some 1050 surface acres of freshwater access in the state of Alabama. This reservoir, Purdy Reservoir or Lake Purdy, is located in Northcentral Alabama, about 30 minutes southeast of Birmingham, Alabama in Shelby County on the headwaters of the Cahaba River. Purdy Reservoir or Lake Purdy was created when the impoundment of the Little Cahaba River in 1923 occurred by the building of Lake Purdy Dam to provide drinking water for the city of Birmingham and for flood control.

This reservoir offers boaters and anglers different opportunities, including bank fishing and pier fishing as well as boat fishing. There are fees for boat and pier fishing, but bank fishing is free. Boaters and anglers alike need to be aware that there is no private boats allowed on this reservoir because it is a drinking water supplier and this helps to deter any invasive species of plants that could be transferred by private boats. However, boat fishing is available on this reservoir because there are boats for rent and the angler has the option of renting a motor as well or to bring their own, as long as it is a 10 horsepower or smaller. The angler can also bring their own depth finder as well or they have the opportunity to rent a boat already loaded with the motor, depth finder and trolling motor.

Fishing on Purdy Reservoir or Lake Purdy can be very fruitful if the angler does a little research. This reservoir offers Largemouth Bass, Smallmouth Bass, Channel Catfish, Black Crappie, Bluegill, White Crappie and Spotted Bass. Anglers will not, however, catch Hybrid Bass or Striped Bass as they have not been stocked, or they should not catch these species of bass. Another positive aspect of fishing this lake or reservoir is that it has fresh, clean water, which means that any fish caught here can also be eaten.
