One of the newer trends in dining out is “high-end” fast food: quickly prepared meals that (usually) cost a little more and taste a bit better. High-end fast food is usually served in more attractive surroundings with better presentation and a presumption of freshness. Occupying the space between traditional fast food giants and full-service restaurants, these high-end fast food establishments are creating all kinds of new rivalries. Now that the McDonalds versus Burger King dialogue is old hat, the new argument is: Qdoba versus Chipotle. Which of these growing high-end fast food chains provides a better burrito experience?

Background

The undisputed champion of fast food Mexican is undoubtedly Taco Bell. While we Americans run for the border regularly, we recognize that Taco Bell’s beef is a bit scary, their cheese is questionable, and their food is meant to be dirt cheap. Just look at how much food you can amass for under $5. By improving the quality and atmosphere of a Taco Bell, along with shortening the menu and increasing the price, we end up with the more palatable Qdobas and Chipotles of the world. While neither Qdoba nor Chipotle is anything like the authentic Tacqueria you may find anchored in a Latino neighborhood, these Americanized burrito centers are far less questionable than Taco Bell and more popular with the business crowd.

With Chipotle owned by McDonalds and Qdoba owned by Jack In the Box, both establishments have the backing of successful corporations that have already made millions flipping burgers. Qdoba and Chipotle offer relatively short menus, with their burritos taking center stage. You can watch your burrito being assembled in roughly the same order at both places: tortilla, rice, beans, meat, salsa, sour cream, and cheese. Following this Subway-style assembly line, you end up with a neatly wrapped burrito at both places. So what are the differences, burrito-related and otherwise?

I'm a big Chipotle guy, some friends got me hooked on it. Fucking love the customization, the ingredients mixed right in front of you, the sheer size of the burritos... Today, Chipotle was closed, so I decided to give Qdoba a try. Worst mistake I've made all week. I got a chicken burrito with "hot" sauce. I say "hot" because this shit is weaker than Mild Taco Bell sauce. The rice is bland, the chicken tastes funny, large portions of the burrito are cold (large being a generous term, this thing is tiny.) Even my Dr. Pepper tastes like crap, like there's something wrong with the syrup. I could get better mexican food from Taco Bell. Not even exaggerating. No comparison, Chipotle is in a league all its own.

(read comment below first) ...of meat total it sells annually is about 170 million pounds. This means that just a little over ¼ of their meat this year is meant to be naturally raised. Guess what? Qdoba has ¾ naturally raised meats at all locations. Even with these odds, only 60% of the chicken that you would get at a regular Chipotle is even chicken at all, naturally raised or not. So that means that in the chicken burrito you ate last week, only 15% of that meat was naturally raised. wrap that up in a tortilla and chew on it

i just recently did an essay for english on whether Qdoba or Chipotle is better. I went behind the scenes for 2 months figuring out the truth about both restaurants, and even volunteered to work at both. For those of you saying chipotle doesnt freeze their food and justifying the fact by saying you can see them cooking it on a stove, you are greatly mistaken. They put the meat on the stove, not to cook it, but to heat it up. Trust me when i say that, because that was my job at Chipotle. also, read this excerpt from my essay on the chicken at both locations: I say there is more to the two restaurants' foods than meets the eye. If you've ever looked into Chipotle ingredients, you would find that Chipotle supports naturally raised meat, right? Not exactly. You see, at the beginning of 2008, Chipotle said it would serve 52 million pounds of naturally raised meats this year. "Hey they are pretty good!" you might think, keep listening. What you don't hear is that the average amount

I eat Chipotle Chicken Burritos a least 4 times a week and I know the manager VERY well. Everything is totally fresh. The CHICKEN is not in bags, you can see them cooking it behind the counter. They don't have Queso Cheese because it is not organic. Chipotle tries not to use any processed foods. They use free range chickens, and organic beans. All their food is prepared fresh daily. I used to go to QDoba for several years because there was no Chipotle in my area. One day I went back to Qdoba after about a year (Chipotle was closed for a holiday) and I couldn't even eat the QDoba. It had almost NO flavor. Trivia: Did you know that Chipotle Chicken is Thigh Meat? It's not Breast Meat like most people think.

I dont know what Chipotle girl is talking about but i currently manage a chipotle, and previously managed a qdoba. The only frozen food qdoba gets, are their cookies, and sofrito garlic seasoning for their grilled veggies. They chop all veggies, but their salsas come frozen, along with their sauces,( It would be a big pain in the ass to make melted cheese { queso} in store.) Chipotle on the other hand gets their tomato's pre-diced, theyre pork and shredded meats in bags, precooked to be heated up in store, on the stove. And their beans come prepackaged and precooked . Qdoba also has timers on all of their food, to ensure freshness. The plus about chipotle is that they support the independent farmer, by (in some markets,) only vending meats that are naturally and humanely raised, and using meat and dairy that does not contain hormones or antibiotics. Th livestock are in addition, fed an entirely vegetarian diet. And they dont keep their meat in a heated box,( Qdoba does this at high vo

I ate at a Chipotle for the first time last night. I got the burrito in a bowl. The black beans were cooked too long...no juice to put on the rice, the pork was too salty. All in all, it was the nastiest tasting food I have ever eaten. I will never go back. Qdoba has the best quality tasting naked burrito's around and the fact that they are owned by Jack in the Box should tell you how good their food is when it comes to taste. Qdoba ROCKS!

CHIPOTLE DOESN'T HAVE ANY FROZEN FOOD !!!!!!!! FIRST, YOU NEED TO HAVE MORE INFORMATION ABOUT THE RESTAURANT AND THE FOOD AND LATER TALK ABOUT IT. AT CHIPOTLE EVERYTHING IS FRESH, THEY CUT EVERYTHING EVERY MORNING AND THEY DON'T HAVE MICROWAVES. QDOBA IS A CHEAP IMITATION !!!!!!!! YOU WANT TO LEARN MORE? WORK IN BOTH AND COMPARE IT IS JUST THAT EASY

Anyone who prefers qdoba over chipotle should have their head examined.
