Part of being a pet owner is the responsibility to take care of the pet's medical needs. Vet bills can often become quite expensive for pet owners. Having pet insurance could make a significant impact on deciding whether or not a beloved pet is able to have a medical procedure. Pet insurance can be extremely useful in the case of a pet accident or emergency. People have health insurance for themselves, spouses and children but often do not know that pet health insurance is also available. When considering pet insurance, think about the normal expenses for pets. Kittens and puppies need a series of vaccinations and de-worming. After the pet has gotten older there are preventative medications for things such as heart worm. All pets need rabies vaccinations. Unless the owner is a breeder, all pets will need to be sterilized to prevent unwanted fertilizations, pregnancies and offspring.
With each visit to the vet, there is an office fee. Most vets will offer a discount to a regular patient versus a new patient. The pet would be the patient. Additional fees are incurred with tests, lengthy examinations, x-rays and medications. Whether the owner has pet insurance or not, it is important to set aside funds monthly that are specifically allocated to pet medical expenses.
Talk to the vet to find out if pet insurance is accepted. Get the names of the pet insurance companies. Some vet offices have pet insurance application forms on hand for pet owners. Another good resource is to check the local phone book and on the internet for pet insurance companies. As with other insurance, make sure that price quotes are compared before actually purchasing a policy.
Research the breed of the pet before applying for insurance. Many breeds have genetic predispositions to certain illnesses and complications as they age. Pet insurance companies charge different rates for some breeds or the company will not cover certain medical conditions of specific breeds. Knowing about the breed will enable the pet owner to know if the insurance company is being fair in the coverage options.
