Scammed at LA Fitness

Lessons Learned from LA Fitness' Fraudulent Business Practices

LA Fitness may be adequate for working out, but when it comes to account management, they are used car salesmen at best.

Every year LA Fitness offers some sort of promotion that makes joining the gym sound easy as pie. Well, that part is true. Everything runs like a well-oiled machine while you're signing your contract and direct debit agreement. What they don't tell you while you're signing up for spinning
classes is the sort of customer service department they run and billing practices they engage in. Here are the three major scams LA Fitness runs on its members.

Scam 1: Sign up discrepancies - You may not be getting what you asked for.

The enrollment counselors are not there to help you get into that size 4 dress, they are there to make money for LA Fitness and line their pockets with commissions. Just like used car salesmen, it's their job to take you for all you're worth. Though the moral of the story is to avoid LA Fitness like the plague, if you do decide to sign up, and are prepared to have a membership there until you die which will then pass on to your children, make sure you sit there and read the entire contract before signing anything.

Don't skim over the long parts or the "yadda yadda yadda" sections. Those are important. If nothing else, take some pleasure in making your overzealous salesperson stare at the wall while you take 20 minutes to read the contract and the accompanying tiny print. It will bring you great satisfaction later.

If you do end up being charged a different monthly fee than you were quoted or services you signed up for are not available to you, make sure you at least spill some Kool-Aid on the carpet or throw toilet paper wads onto the ceiling before leaving the gym that day. Why? Because it's a preemptive strike on the war you are about to engage in.

kirsten, you are a misleading person. Having worked in this industry for many years(not at la fit)i know that you are the kind of person who will discourage people from getting the results the signed up for. rule #1-Get Month-To-Month!!! Are you very active? there are two kinds of active people, outdoors, and gym types. if your an outdoors person stay away from gyms! you will find any reason that doesn't fit your comfort zone to try to talk your way out of it, and also get others to QUIT with you. Gym's are a fantastic place for your average person to learn about body maintenance and most importantly NUTRITION! Stop telling these people to give up losing weight or worse give up over something you signed and didn't understand that will slow or stop your path towards a healthy life style....!!!

If there are no pending class action suits, their may be very soon. I don't have for the research but a simple internet search yields pages of complains and even dedicated websites regarding these issues. A search for 'la fitness class action lawsuit' currently yields 11,200,000 results in Google.

cont...free sessions and try and get a free week guest pass to try the gym out. Never sign the contract the first day of the tour. You can ask for a copy of the contact to look over at home. As far as trying to cancel you membership the contract you signed is pretty binding. When you go in to cancel make sure you cancel with a membership consultant and not some random worker at the front desk. You'll probably have to pay a prorated cancellation fee if you are still in contract ( Just like a cell phone.) Theres a form that they usually have to fill out when you cancel. Make sure the date, amount you had the pay to cancel and your name and employees name is on it and get a copy of it. Staple the receipt for the cancellation fee to the form and hold on to it for a year just in case. The cancellation process is usually easy as long as you're prepared. Good luck.

Renee Socal. I used to work membership at a gym so hopefully I can help you a bit. A lot of people don't realize that a gym membership contact is the exact same as a cell phone contact. You pick and choose a monthly rate based on the contact length (one yr, two yr, pay in full or month to month.)As well as the services you're going to get (Just a place to workout, training, classes, tennis, etc.) Therefore, joining a gym should be researched WELL. Yes its true most membership consultants are motivated by the potential about of commission they can make. Ask the membership consultant a lot of question. Figure out just how much they workout and do they take their own advice (I had a co-worker who was a real pain BUT he was an avid cycler...even biked across the US (and he was in his 50s). Also ask to speak with a personal trainer that same day you get a tour of the facility, or ask to speak with the trainers manager to help you find the right trainer for you. Set up one of your free sess

I am a current member of LA Fitness and I am being charged almost $40.00 a month for my membership as well as $232 a month for training. I have so far been there for 6 months kept most of my training appointments (I was on trainer #4) the others left or got fired. I followed my latest trainer (who quit La Fit for mistreatment) to another facility where he trains me for a much lesser price. This man has a degree in Kinesiology as well as diet, nutrition and is certified through a real school. He told me about the unethical practices going on at that gym (never did he speak of them on the job) but after he left. He was the only one qualified and the only one I have ever seen results with since I started. My first trainer took advantage of my naivety and used up all my free sessions within a period of 4 months. You get 6 free ones a month but how do you benefit from that? I train now at another place 2 times a week with the offer of coming in for cardio on my own for free anytime I wan

Fitness and I have also paid for personal training. They abide to their polocies. It only takes a few minutes to read the agreements. If you dont understand what it states, then call!

- there are going to be people who work and care more than others. Curt, I dont understand why you would provide more information than you should about other people. How would you like it if someone were upset because in their eyes you did something wrong (when you were just following the polocies of the company you work for), and gave your (in this case, Joseph's) number to other people. That opens doors to harrasment. No where in the contract does it say that you or your wife or anyone, for that matter, will stay with the same trainer always. If the services were used regularly, then she is getting results or just really likes it. About corporate emails and phone numbers.... well, that's why the managers are there. The only reason people want to contact the corporate office is to "try to get their money back or complain because: they weren't told about something or they didn't read the contract). In a business perspective, it's all BS. One last thing, I am a member of LA Fi
