Spencer Tracy was called at various times "a man's man" and "an actor's actor." He was one of the silver screen's greatest stars and there is nobody among the modern stable of film actors today who even comes close to him. Tracy was skilled at doing both drama and comedy films and all of his performances seemed natural and effortless. Although he did not possess the conventional handsomeness of most male stars who were popular during his years in motion pictures, that didn't seem to matter to the legion of fans who flocked to see his movies. There was just something irresistibly charming about Spencer Tracy.

He was born Spencer Bonaventure Tracy in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on April 5, 1900 to the Irish Catholic household of John and Caroline Tracy. Spencer was a rather incorrigible student and got expelled from 15 different elementary schools. He finally made it to Marquette Academy, but was still so desirous of getting out of going to school that he anxiously enlisted in the navy at the beginning of World War I. Somewhat disappointed that he spent the duration of the war
stateside, he enrolled in Bipon College after he was discharged from the service. This time around, school was a lot more enjoyable, since he got involved with debating and drama. Spencer discovered that he had a natural gift for acting.
