Being a HUGE Anthony Hopkins fan, I thought the prequel to Silence of the Lamb would be interesting to see how awful circumstances created a human flesh eating serial killer. This film was interesting and disappointing. French Actor, Gaspard Ulliel made the hairs on my entire body stand up with his Oscar-worthy acting but I kept asking myself why do I want to see Christian Bale play this role and not this new comer? His facial expressions and the absence of human emotion kept sending my brain to American Psycho flashbacks.

We learn that young Hannibal loses his family in World War II as soldiers take over his home and keep him as his sister Mischa hostage. The love he has for his sister give the audience one point of relativism for young Hannibal as a big brother protecting his younger sister. But, poor Mischa catches a cold that causes the soldiers to rule it as pneumonia to justify eating her since they are all out of food.

Here comes the disappointing part. I can understand being traumatized about losing your parents. I can understand wanting revenge for the unspeakable act of what was done to his sister. I can even understand wanting them to die the same way your helpless sister died. However, I can not understand how revenge can consume a human being, criminal or murderous master mind to ever think that eating you enemy is ok just because they eat your sister.

TaNika, Fascinating review, it got me to thinking. The old nature vs. nurture debate. I watched the film and kept waiting for some kind of rationale that would explain a justification for not just the revenge angle, but the method also. Like you I was left feeling like the antagonists deserved a bad outcome, but to be eaten? Seems over the top.
