Garden of the Gods is located in the beautiful city of Colorado Springs,Colorado. It is open to the public all year round for no cost, unless renting a horse or visiting the visitors center for knick knacks and sort. Other than that, your trip through the Garden of the Gods is completely free and open from 9 am to 11 pm daily. The history of Garden of the Gods started about 300 million years ago. Pieces from the Ancestral Rockies were carried east and spread along the great alluvial fans. The rock was then reddened by feric iron and covered by a very shallow sea. After some time, the Rocky Mountains began their upward journey, the gorgeous, reddened rocks were elevated and tilted towards the sky. As with wonders of the world, the rain and wind eventually took the soft layers away and sculptured each one of the rocks to what we know them as today.
Gateway Rocks - These rocks as we call them, go several hundred feet above the ground, and form a natural gateway to the beautiful site of Garden of the Gods.
Kissing Camels - These spectacular rocks sit on the very top of the North Gateway Rock. Whether up close or in the distance, you can see why they are called the Kissing Camels. These two rocks are one of the most fabulous scenes you will ever lay your eyes upon.
Signature Rock - Here is a rock that holds history by the writing of a pen or carving of a knife. This rock is located at the North Gate of Garden of the Gods. It is filled with hundreds of signatures dated back to 1858 when the Colorado gold rush began. Each name is accompanied by the date that it was written and visitors can take a little of history with just a quick glance.
There are many formation of rocks including the ones above that are indeed a spectacular sight to see. Balancing Rock is the one that you must pay attention to and soak in. Balancing rock is an enormous rock making you the person look like an ant when you stand beside it. It is balanced on one of the corners of itself, posing for all visitors far and near to see. Please see picture one.
