Bremen, Germany is the northernmost point on the country's Fairy Tale Road, the north-south route commemorating the folktales compiled by the Brothers Grimm. A longtime seaport, Bremen has an active maritime industry and preserves monuments to its seafaring history. Modern Bremen has developed into an important center for aerospace science in Europe. These qualities make Bremen a fun destination for families with children.

Bremen is a sizeable city. Its population tops 500,000. Located on the Weser River southwest of Hamburg, Bremen suffered severe damage to its infrastructure in World War II. Though much of the architecture is therefore modern, many centuries-old buildings have survived.

The following top attractions should be a centerpiece of any family trip to Bremen:

The UniversumScienceCenter, Weiner Strasse 2, Tel. 49 0 421 33 46 333, is a sight to see, shaped like a whale and immersed in water. Inside, the museum undertakes no less than to explain everything from the workings of the human mind to the mysteries of the universe with understandable, yet awe-inspiring hands-on exhibits. Children with perpetual questions can get answers here! Universum Science Center's 250 exhibits are arranged by theme: Mankind, Earth and the Cosmos. Activities include exploring the center of the Earth, investigating the light emanated by the sun, and studying how the universe came into being. Check the amazing website for photos: www.usc-bremen.de. Parts of the website have been translated into English. Admission for a family with 2 adults and at least 2 children under 18 is 31 €, or 12 € per adult and 8 € for children age 6 and up. Universum Science Center is open Monday-Friday 9 a.m. -6 p.m., weekends 10 a.m. - 7 p.m..

I haven't visited Bremen yet, but you've given me some good ideas for when I get the chance!

Bremen Town Musicians was one of my favourite stories after I heard it in Munich when I was small. In fact until the last move, when it got lost, I had a small flat black iron representation of the"musicians", that I used to hang outside my front door to symbolically ward off robbers.

Wench. Just rub it in. We were supposed to go down to Germany yesterday, but a snow storm blew into Sweden (about time, actually... winter here with no snow just aint right) so our plans have been put off about a week. grrrr.
