St. Patrick's Day is known for the rainbows. Making St. Patrick's Day handprint rainbows are fun and a great way to get children involved in a classroom project that can be displayed on a bulletin board or classroom wall. For others, making handprint rainbows can be a fun weekend or rainy project. The handprint rainbow can hang on the refrigerator or wall. Because it is made with handprints, these rainbows make a special art piece to add to scrap books or save to later give away as presents after the holiday is long gone.

Making the standard construction paper handprint rainbow costs approximately $1.00 per child. Making the variation handprint rainbow cost $1.00 to $2.50 per child. The handprint rainbow project should take around 30 minutes to complete.

Handprint Rainbow Materials:

  • Multi-color construction paper
  • Pencils
  • Paint brushes or sponges (optional)
  • Wipes
  • Scissors
  • Standard white glue
  • White or light brown bulletin board paper
  • Paint Smocks or clothing protections (optional)
  • Large bristle or sponge paint brush (optional)
  • Red Paint (optional)
  • Yellow Paint (optional)
  • Blue Paint (optional)
  • Purple Paint (optional)
  • Green Paint (optional)
  • Pink Paint (optional)
  • Red pudding (optional)
  • Blue pudding (optional)
  • Green pudding (optional)
  • Yellow pudding (optional)
  • Purple pudding (optional)


Handprint Rainbows Standard Instructions:

  1. Give each child safety scissors, pencil and two sheets of construction paper of each color.
  2. Have the child or help the child trace a handprint onto the construction paper.
  3. Have the child or help the child to cut out each handprint.
  4. Gather up all the handprints.
  5. Glue the handprints to the bulletin board paper in the shape of a rainbow. Use one color of handprints per arch of the rainbow.
  6. Display bulletin board St. Patrick's Day handprint rainbow on the wall or bulletin board.
