Montgomery is a great city for music. It's rich traditions of spirituals and gospel music and very early blues goes back to the first part of the 20th Century and well before. This tradition has always been alive and flourishing. With the advent of the big record labels, many of the population was exposed to a "sub-culture" of beautiful, haunting, and sometimes lively music that became more and more popular. Imitation being the best form of compliment meant that groups sprang up with their own interpretations of older songs, while innovators added to the wealth and varieties of music available. Now Montgomery has dozens of great clubs that specialize in either blues and jazz or ones that have branched out into other forms of music. There is always live music most any day of the week, year-round, for everyone who wants to dance of just sit and listen.

Just called "The Brewpub" by locals, this venue is in an old warehouse in downtown Montgomery and has been operating for quite a while. I was impressed that every Monday night they give discounts to members of the armed services and their families. They also allow smoking. This place has lots of great live music every Friday and Saturday nights, from acoustic to alternative, country, and some innovative regional bands. Happy hour is 4-7 p.m. and they offer a menu of bar food, plus some interesting burgers and lovely salads and seafood at very reasonable prices. Nothing is over $10 I believe. Contact them to see who's going to be playing that weekend 12 West Jefferson Street 334-834-BREW(2739)
