So You Want to Sell Your HomeSounds easy enough. I've watched Extreme Home Makeover, I've seen that show While You Were Out. It looked pretty easy. How hard could it be to touch up my home enough to make it marketable. Surely even an amateur such as myself would be able to touch things up with little money and big success. Well, It's been a long hard month, my back aches, my hips hurt, my hair has paint in it, but my wallet is not nearly as empty as I was expecting and my house is on the market.
Calling in All Your Favors Makes the Pizza Delivery Man Rich
Very little money means a do-it-yourself project. I have to admit I am not a handy kind of girl. So, if you don't have a lot of friends with a diverse amount of talents then the do-it-yourself way just might not work for you. I had to call in a LOT of favors. The first thing to do is to assess what needs to be done. I found that the more room I had the easier it was to do the things that needed to be done. My advice is to have a packing party and box up everything that you do not "need". Lets define need - You do not need plates, cups, and utensils, plastic will work. You do not need all of the items in your bathroom - toothpaste, a tooth brush and a little basket of things you use everyday under your sink. I have to admit I was really surprised how well I could live in a home with very little in it. It was actually quite nice considering I am usually a clutter freak.
Did You Put Highlights in Your Hair, or Is That Paint?
If you do anything in your home at all, the only thing I can say is paint, paint, paint. Just remember as you choose your colors, the way to sell a home is to let buyers imagine themselves in it. I heard from everyone I know that neutral is the way to go. I repainted my living room and dining room walls and what an amazing difference it made. I also had rooms that just needed some touching up and found that if you can somehow get at least a half dollar size of the paint from anywhere in your home most places like Lowes and Home Depot can match it. I was pleasantly surprised with the results of something so easy.
