"A well regulated Militia being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms shall not be infringed." These words make up what is known as the Second Amendment to the United States Bill of Rights. There are those who believe the Second Amendment is representative of an out dated philosophy that serves no purpose in modern society. After all, anti-gun proponents' claim that the National Guard is the equivalent of the 18th century Militia, hence, everyday citizens are no longer responsible for the common defense of their nation and/or state.

In addition, the anti-gun lobby declares that owning a gun for self-protection serves no logical purpose, because the police will protect us from eminent danger, and they fallaciously argue that gun possession presents an inevitable danger to both you and your family. Those who rationalize the abandonment of the Second Amendment misrepresent statistical facts to support their claims, which lure the public into accepting their erroneous assertion that guns are the ill of society.

Hopefully, we will never forget the names of Mark Bingham, Todd Beamer, Jeremy Click, Tom Burnett, and Lou Knacker. These men, along with others aboard United Flight 93 were ordinary American citizens who collectively thwarted off the horrendous plan of a group of terrorists. The brave Americans just mentioned were ordinary people who acted in an extraordinarily gallant fashion when faced against oppressors of freedom. The heroic actions displayed by the passengers aboard United Flight 93 exemplifies the concept of "Militia" that our Forefathers refer to in the Second Amendment, as they were ordinary people acting in the common defense of their nation.

World-renowned criminologist Gary Kleck, conducted a national survey in 1993, and found that there was roughly 2-million defensive gun uses per year by law-abiding citizens.
