Mothers Tell MySpace Breastfeeding is Not Obscene

The online community MySpace is stirring up trouble among its users that are mothers. Many mothers are furious over the fact that MySpace has been deleting any photos that portray breastfeeding. The photos are being pulled for

violating the terms of agreement, which state that any content that is offensive, illegal or violate the rights, harm, or threaten the safety of any person may be deleted. Many are wondering how images of breastfeeding fits into those terms.

As a virtual protest many mothers have begun changing their user pictures to that of nursing babies. The breastfeeding mothers claim that nursing is not offensive at all, and that by being more public about it they are helping to normalize something that has been hidden under a cloud of shame for years. Many feel that the sexualization of the female breast makes it difficult for many to see a difference between using the breast for sex and using the breast for its intended purpose, which is to feed a child. This is on top of an already diminished view of breastfeeding held from the early 1950s when doctors often told women that their milk was not good enough and many families felt that formula created by science was a better choice.

The debated over breastfeeding photos has sparked a fire among those who support breastfeeding in public and those who feel it is disgusting. Many mothers who have breastfeeding photos are finding themselves attacked by those who feel that the breast is a purely sexual object. Hate filled messages are being sent out to many mothers on MySpace for sharing their breastfeeding photos, some are going as far as reporting every photo that the mothers have on their account often resulting in all of the photos deleted by MySpace.

Everyone has the right to feed their own child however they see fit. (Personally i feel that if our babies were meant to drink cows milk, then cows would birth our babies.. right? Granted it's different if a woman isn't able to bf her child don't get me wrong.) Women make milk for a reason, to feed our young. It pisses me off the our society sees the breast ONLY as sexual, that right there is the problem! When i'm out & have to nurse my baby in public i occassionally get "how dare you do that in public" glare (or as i call it the drop dead stare.) even though i always use a nursing cover up! I feel like shouting at those people "if you don't like it, don't look damnit!" I mean come on, i'm covered up out of respect for them & my baby is sweating and miserable and so am i.. and i'm STILL getting glares. Rediculous!

I'm sure the folks at MySpace are more concerned with lawsuits and parents continuing to permit their children to access their site than they are with morality per se. The real enemy here is the culture, which has so demonized sex and is so afraid of it that people in the 21st century can consider breastfeeding "disgusting" and "unnatural," and the primary function of the female breast to be sexual rather than propagating the species. It boggles the mind. We need to bring this country back to the real world. We can start by making government recognize the difference between public morals and Christian morals. Too many Christians today treat our country as though it were their personal church, and assume it is their divine right to make rules for the rest of us. The female breast performing its nursing function is not sexual. Only a pervert finds it so; and people who treat it as sexual, for whatever reason, are promoting the very perversion they claim to abhor.

So let me get this straight, its not ok for a mother to feed her child in public because her breasts are obscene? But its alright for 2 gays to play tongue hockey in front of my kids say on public transport!!! What the hell kind of society are we promoting?

I breastfed both of my children now 29 and 26. I did it in public. I draped a receiving blanket over me so I wouldn't show off too much but I nursed in public. It's a beautiful thing. I'm not a prude but I don't think you should hang it out for all to see but I see nothing wrong with breastfeeding in public.

My wife's girlfriend told her she wanted her to watch while she breastfed her baby.My wife suggested I ask her if I could taste her breastmilk. What's wrong with that. She was disguested, and said I should find a prostiture who was nursing,as in her opinion breastfeeding is only between the mother and the baby.My wife couldnt have children, and hence she couldnt breastfeed me.Alas!

All I'm going to say It's my baby its my breast milk. If you don't like me breast feeding then fine thats you. I just think its kinda shitty that people can call us out for breast feeding OUR babies but If i was to say to gay men/women holding hands is gross I would be the worst person on the earth and have a tribe of gays on my ass. Its better to ignore the ignorance of people and do what is best for our babies. I'm a VERY PROUD BREAST FEEDING MOTHER! I'm blessed to be able to breast feed my baby. (I'm not against gays i'm just using it for a ex.)
