Differences Between Switzerland and Sweden

No, They're Not the Same Place

Probably most Americans won't know this until I point it out - a large percentage of the population confuse Sweden and Switzerland. If after reading that first sentence, you find yourself wondering just what is the difference between Switzerland and Sweden, read on.
Even if you know that the Swiss are punctual bankers who make chocolate while the Swedes are Volvo-making, vodka drinking nudists who were well represented on the muppets, I might surprise you with some new tidbits.

First, location, location, location. Sweden is a phallic looking land mass which begins in the arctic circle and terminates in the Baltic Sea. Sweden has 3,218 kilometers of coastline. It is separated from Russia by a thin slip of land called Finland.

Switzerland, by contrast, is a landlocked country in central Europe. It bears no resemblance to any body part. It has no coastline, and is bordered by five countries: Germany, France, Italy, Austria, and Liechtenstein. It is separated from Russia by a large group of countries called Eastern Europe.

Next, language. In Sweden, the Swedish people speak Swedish (or Svenska, which means Swedish in Swedish.) In Switzerland, the Swiss people speak German, French, Italian, and Romansch.

Let's move on to landscape. As we already know, Sweden has a coastline on the Baltic Sea. It also has a lot of lakes. The mountains in Sweden form its border with Norway, their highest point is 2,111 meters. Most of Sweden is not mountainous. The CIA factbook says Sweden's chief natural hazard is ice floes interfering with maritime traffic.

Switzerland's landscape is described as mostly mountainous. Its lowest point is 195 meters above sea level, its highest is 4, 634 meters - more than twice the height of Sweden's highest point. The CIA factbook says Switzerland's biggest natural hazards are avalanches, landslides, and flash floods.

Sweden's population is just over 9 million, Switzerland's is just over 7.5 million. Oddly, the two countries share the same life expectancy at birth - 80.51 years. Apparently Switzerland's avalanches and landslides aren't taking any more lives than Sweden's ice floes.

LOL. I know why Americans don't know the difference, and I don't claim they should care. But...it is sort of basic world geography and politics. It's good to have at least a loose grasp on what parts of the world are where and what that means to us.

The US is a vast place with everyone sharing the same language and cultural background. People aren't that different from each other even if you travel across the whole country. In Europe, most countries aren't larger than the average US state and there are so many different languages, peoples and traditions, it's hard to count them. If you're American, imagine everyone speaking a different language when you cross over into another state. Imagine having to learn that language along with the cultural dos and don'ts if you wanted to apply for a job. I don't think Americans are stupid or overly ignorant. They simply don't need to deal with many problems people have elsewhere. Why should they care if it's Switzerland or Sweden? After all, they can move from NY to LA and needn't expect any drastic changes.

"Swedes are Volvo-making, vodka drinking nudists who were well represented on the muppets". hahahahaa... Im not swedish, but i live in sweden for 19 years and found it funny, couse here in Sweden people have the same myths about other cultures and countries. Once a swede asked me if in Southamerica we have computers. They only show southamerica and some other countries with a very strange point of view. I guess we all live in bubles. And live with tthe information we recieve from newspapers and tvs, I think its better to know things is by traveling and actually spending time there for a few months. :-) I like your writing style.

Wow. Good job on the article. Just so happened that I decided to figure out the differences of the two. Always wanted to go to one of them but was never able to tell which one it was. We are ignorant ..... can't really help it. America is just another little plannet :)

As a swiss i get this whole sweden/switzerland mixup all the time in the UK. So these clarifications are good. Heres some usefull points to point out swiss people: many swiss although catergorise ourselves under this name, come from different cultures and ancestors from each other being swiss german or french etc. Also we love Rivella, Biberli and Roshti. Swiss germans are a bit more chilled out than the germans in one way, yet more strict then them in another. But were still very patriotic and believe in peace, we just want to live a beautiful and colourful life as is our right. I've never been to sweden but i'd like to go there and see what life is like up north, so i cant say for now what their like but i'm sure their a great bunch.

Anders, by your first name, I'd guess you're a Swede - or at least a European. I've often wanted to write about why we Americans are ignorant (in the literal sense, not the pejorative sense) about the rest of the world. There are some very solid cultural and practical causes of this real problem. Sadly, I just don't have the organizational skills nor the time to write the volumes it would take to examine all the angles. Just know this - you have the fortune to be seeing the problem from the outside. If you were born and raised in the US, chances are pretty good you'd be an American too - with all the benefits and weaknesses that encompasses.

Great article. I can't imagine why people would confuse the two.:)
