Who Should Buy the Mortal Kombat Franchise?

Midway filed for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy early this year. As part of their plan to save the company, Midway may have to sell the Mortal Kombat franchise. The popular mature fighting series composes of over ten mainline games and numerous spin-offs. It is by far the most valuable asset for
Midway. Their loss is someone's gain, however. So who should purchase the Mortal Kombat intellectual property from Midway? Let's take a look a several potential buyers.

Capcom

No other companies are associated with fighting games as much as Capcom. After all, they started the craze with Street Fighter II. In fact, Mortal Kombat wouldn't have existed without the aforementioned title. For Capcom, buying Mortal Kombat from Midway will give them two of the most popular fighting franchises. Not to mention that it will also open up the possibility of a crossover game between Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat. That will be a fanboy's dream come true.

Namco

Right behind Capcom in the fighting games department is Namco. They may actually be a better fit since their specialty is 3D fighters, which Mortal Kombat is currently evolving into. Already with Tekken and Soulcalibur under their belt, Namco's purchase of the Mortal Kombat intellectual property will give them a triple threat that might put them over Capcom as the best fighting company around.

Nintendo

Although it may seems like an odd match at first, Mortal Kombat may be what Nintendo currently needs. Nintendo has a perception problem with hardcore gamers due to the lack of mature-rated games on their gaming systems. The purchase of Mortal Kombat should alleviate some of Nintendo's problem. Furthermore, Nintendo could also use the famous Mortal Kombat fighters for their popular Super Smash Bros. titles.

Damn shame what happened to that franchise. I saw this coming after MK3 released, and i'm sad to say, it gradualy deteriorated exactly as i expected it would.... with each release getting progressively worse. The real irony is, all they really need to save themselves from bankruptcy is 1 hard-core MK game that's true to the series' concrete somewhat believable, bloody, gory, violent, kick ass roots. But they may all be too far gone to create such a game these days. It seems like after MK2 they became obsessed with some super ridiculous, totally lame, unbelievable, far beyond any scope of reality BS concept. And it appears everything from in-game fatalities to production films were severely toned down to potentially appeal to a broader range of people. That obviously backfired AND pissed off the core fan base in the process. Seriously, who makes a pg-13 movie based on a mature themed game that was initially met with protest by just about every parent in the free world. And

I find it funny that you say that I can't find a better match than the companies you chose but yet the only one I could think of before actually reading the article is Sega. The thing with Mortal Kombat is that it's not as valuable as people think, it's only a recognizable name. So more than likely the company that would need it would be the one that would have to prove itself. Namco and Capcom definitely don't need the franchise, Nintendo doesn't make mature games and will continue not to (they leave that to 2nd and 3rd parties), Microsoft is really the only one I can agree with but they're just better off making a new franchise. Sega on the other hand could use an extra fighting game up their sleeves, though arguably Sega could just revive some of their old fighting games also, instead of just relying on Virtua Fighter.

I think Bethesda or Bioware should take it and turn it into a fighting/rpg aproach in the likes of Jade Empire. I love the early Mortal Kombat games and was positively refreshed when Mortal Kombat Shaolin Monks came and you could go co-op on the MK universe. That was a great turn for the series.
