Tips for Freelance Writing

Okay so we all know we can't write in the dark, hence most writers at the beginning of their careers have nine to five jobs. What about the time you have in between? If you are truly dedicated to honing your craft, and testing the waters, freelance work might be a consideration and a good proving gr
ound, while you still work on your masterpiece.

You know what you like to read, so this should give you a clue about what you might want to write. The next time you flip through your favorite magazine, examine the articles closely. Pay attention to the way they are written, the writers' use of the English language, and how well the article caught your attention and kept your attention. Was it informative? Did you find it useful or entertaining? Maybe you have a niche market where you have an experience to share. What about personal and professional experiences or something witnessed that you think is worth writing about? I am convinced everyone has something unique to share. Do it. But do it the right way.

First and foremost be familiar with the publication. Nothing is going to turn an editor off more than receiving material that is not a fit for their magazine. Request their guidelines and follow them to the letter. More importantly, query the magazine. Don't just send a blind article if you have not queried the publication. It makes you look unprofessional and your article will never get read. Always keep a good query letter in your files. Present an overview of your article in a manner such as the sample query below.
