Fans of Viewtiful Joe, Okami and God Hand need rejoice, as the beloved Clover will see a resurrection of sorts, though not in the way fans might have expected.
Clover Studios became known as one of the best collections of talent in gaming history with Shinji Mikami of Resident Evil fame, Hideki Kamiya of Devil May Cry fame and Atsushi Inaba of Viewtiful Joe fame. 2006's Okami was one of the most heralded games of the year, but managed to fall short in term
s of financial success. In fact, the game's lack of success in sales is widely believed to have caused the dissolution of the development studio. However, nearly every title that was released under Clover was widely recognized for quality (with the exception of God Hand which received some mixed reviews from publications and internet web sites). The problem was that none of the games sold enough to warrant any type of massive phenomenon, unlike other contemporaries such as Final Fantasy or God of War.
Though Mikami continues to work with Capcom on a contractual basis both Kamiya and Inaba have left Capcom for greener pastures or in their words fresh challenges. The implosion of Clover Studio came as devastating news to fans of the series developed by Clover and many believed (and still do) that Okami will fall into relative obscurity.
However, it has been revealed that Seeds, a developer that was created this past August seems to be a bit of an asylum for the departed developers if not more. Inaba has been revealed to be the president of the development studio. Mikami and Kamiya are also onboard with the young development studio.
Zealous fans have already began to predict sequels to the critically successful games that Clover Studio had created. Though, Capcom would more likely than not own the rights to the creations which would make anything above a spiritual successor impossible. Something in the vein of Xenogears into Xenosaga would be much more likely. Seeds promises to bring colorful games in the vein of Viewtiful Joe and Okami to consoles.
