1. Cross country

They are made with more durable parts. They usually have disc brakes. For the serious mountain biker, there is no such thing as an "off the shelf" downhill mountain bike. These types of bikes are usually custom built.

3. Trails

If you want to ride trails and only trails, this is your mountain bike. Before actually riding on a trail, a few basic skills should be practiced and perfected, to lower the risk of injury. To fully master trail riding can take a lifetime of practice, but it's very rewarding and fun. Trail bikes also are also rarely bought "off the shelf." Most trail mountain bikers prefer to have one customized and built. These types of mountain bikes are very light weight.

4. Jump and slalom

This type of mountain bike is built from very durable materials. They have to be able to endure being jumped on a regular basis. Besides jumping, jump and slalom mountain bikes are made for street racing and slalom events. They have a very strong front end suspension system.
