This Clay Piggy Bank craft project is perfect for teaching kids how to save some money. The entire Clay Piggy Bank project will take a few hours, so do it when the kids are ready to sit still.

You should be able to complete the entire Clay Piggy Bank craft project for around $5 per child. Cost will depend on the type of materials you decide to purchase.

To Make a Clay Piggy Bank Your Kids Will Need:

Air Drying Clay Product (Recommendations at the end of the article)

Tempera or Acrylic Paint

Clear Acrylic Spray Paint

Paint Brushes (In a variety of sizes)

Clay working Tools (Recommendations for homemade ones at the end)

To start making your Clay Piggy Bank break off a chunk of clay. Have the kids work the clay in their hands until it becomes softer and easier to work with.

The first step is to roll this air drying clay into a coil. The longer the coil the more you will have to work with. I like my coils to be about ½ inch thick. A little thinner won't hurt.

Start making the base to your Clay Piggy Bank by working the coil around in a tight square, rectangle, or circle. Work out until you have a base the size or diameter you would like.

Use your fingers and clay tool to rub and spread the clay together. You can also use a little water on a paint brush to help loosen the clay and make it stick. Don't go over board with the water though.

When you have finished the Piggy Bank base cover it with a piece of plastic wrap and set it aside. You need to keep it moist so you can attach the sides of the Clay Piggy Bank craft project.

Have the kids break off more clay and make coils again. Use the coils to work up the sides of the Clay Piggy Bank. This can be any shape they want, but I think a square or rectangle shaped piggy bank works best.

Place the first coil on the base and keep adding to it. Work higher and higher. Use water, clay working tool, and your fingers to smooth the clay and make sure it is firmly attached to the base.

Work coils along the top to create a completely whole piggy bank. This will keep kids form being able to open their piggy bank unless they are willing to break it open.

If you want though you can make a separate lid or even cut out a hole in the base to stick a cork into.
