my January sunshine, the lure of this historic retreat for Hollywood types, and an eclectic mix of films from around the world, many nominated for the Academy Award, as well as American indies and studio fare.

Now, the Palm Springs International Film Festival has become a top tier showcase and this year, it hosted 55 of the 61 films offered for Best Foreign Film Oscar. Among the various properties where travelers stay is the landscaped charm and elegance of the Andalusian Court (www.theandalusiancourt.com), its eight independent villas nestled among meandering paths, painted frescoes, vines and gardens. The Sinclairs lived in what are now two upstairs units with sunny views of the San Jacinto Mountains and part of the surrounding Tennis Club district, walking distance to the central shopping area, bordered by the major thoroughfares of Palm Canyon and Indian Canyon Boulevards. The Sinclair family put up some of glitterati of the time. In present-day villa number three, Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz were often the inhabitants. It is said that little Ricky took his first steps on the front porch of number four. Vic Morrow, star of the gritty, powerful World War Two series Combat!, was another guest.
