Drivers traveling down the highway in Northern Virginia on Saturday morning got to see a very unusual scene as 165,000 eggs spilled out of an overturned 18 Wheeler on the Capital Beltway.Michael Karbonski, of the Virginia Department of Transportation said that the massive egg spill looked like a giant omelet, I have never seen anything like it before.
The tractor-trailer smashed into a guardrail and flipped over just after midnight on Saturday, dumping its messy load and forcing Police to close an exit ramp to Interstate 66 and the far left lane of Interstate 495 North for many hours. Everything reopened once again just after 11 a.m. after the long clean up job was finished
The driver of the big rig had fled the scene of the crash before police arrived and still had not been located by Saturday afternoon, said state police spokesman Sgt. Terry Licklider. He said the driver would most likely face serious criminal charges for fleeing the scene of an accident and possibly many other offenses. For him to just run away like that is beyond all explanation.
The truck and trailer are owned by H.L.W. Inc. in Moorefield, West Virginia. The owner and operator of the company, H.L. Wilson, reported to local Authorities that he hadn't heard from the driver at all since the accident either.
Local and State Police searched the area for the missing driver using a helicopter but haven't had any luck locating him as of yet.
Virginia Department of Transportation spokesperson Joan Morris said that the eggs made their way to a drainage ditch on the side of the highway where they created a huge stream of yellow yolk.
It's a real good thing it wasn't summer, officials said, because the mess could have been allot worse. Cold temperatures prevented workers from using any water to clean the road for fear of freezing the eggs and the Highway. Instead, the Department of highways used just over 250 pounds of cat litter to absorb the giant asphalt omelet then swept it all up and took it away in three trash containers.
