A Meat Eater Learns More About Two Heallthy Lifestyles That Both Start with "V"

I never understood the difference between being a vegan and being a vegetarian. To me they seemed to be cut from the same cloth. Kind of like the way one pronounces the word "tomato". Is it toe-may-toe..? Or is it toe-mah-toe...? Does it really matter if you're both trying to accomplish the same goa
l? And so it was - I thought - with vegan and vegetarian diets.

Little did I know that vegans and vegetarians are a world apart. By definition, vegetarians are those individuals that do not eat any meat products, they will however, eat dairy products and eggs. Vegans on the other hand, do not consume any animal products at all! Or derivitives or such. So guess where an egg comes from? A Chicken! And milk? A cow! So you can cross both eggs and milk off your list. The Vegan diet walks a hard thin line. I admire both groups of people. They have both made choices that will leave them healthier and I presume happier, while living a longer life. On the other hand, there are those of us who have decided to take the short road: I happen to enjoy a hearty steak every now and then, am wild about ribs, and I enjoy dairy products. I too am happy, perhaps not as healthy, but if I keel over tomorrow at least it will be with a full stomach. Like I said, it's all about choices.

The Vegan diet doesn't seem very exciting on the surface - - lots and lots of grains, but also fruits, vegetables and beans. All are low in fat and contain little or no cholesterol. And all vegan food is rich in fiber . Let it be said, that vegans do not suffer from irregularity. In fact, with a little planning and common sense, vegans can create a diet that provides all the nutrients they need, without any reference to animal products. Lesson Number One; vegan food doesn't have to look or taste good in order to be good for you (kind of like the castor oil you took as a kid).

Hey everyone -- while I think it's great this article has spurred some discussion the foul language has got to stop. there's no place for it on this site. I have to report this to the administrator. Please refrain for the foul language.

I came across your comments as I was looking up the difference between a vegan and a vegetarian. I am appalled at the foul language you use to express yourself. Every person has a right to choose what they eat. I am a Christian, and I have seen nowhere in the Bible where God said not to eat meat. Now on the other hand, the cruelty comes from cruel people. Charles Munson might have been a vegetarian or vegan, yet he found it perfectly alright to slaugher human beings. "Judge ye not." Take care of your own business and leave everybody else's alone. However, if you have to state your feeling, please don't use the foul language. Many children use these sites as references. What about them? Is is good to pollute their minds with these filthy words? Also, some of the spelling and typing are awful. Go to school, get an education, learn how to spell and write, and then take up another cause.

I personally, Have just converted from being a regular meat eater, to a vegeterian. I haven't ate any meat in 2 weeks, and I'd have to say it's not as hard as you would think. I LOVE IT. I feel more energized and even better about my inner self because I don't have the guilt hanging over me of a slaughtered, innocent animal that is digesting in my stomache. I prayed about whether becoming a vegeterian was the right thing for me, and I came to the conclusion that after watching the "Meet your Meat" vid, that I will never eat meat again. (or wear fur, for that matter) and I am slowly converting to soy milk. =] yay, me.

All of you meat eater dont seem to understand how cruel these animals are slaughtered. Most are dipped into waters of 140 degrees. Most are having their throats slit, when they are conscius. They are getting choppe into pieces, while in a living state. How would you feel is someone cut off your testicles and shredded your stomach and slit your throat with any pain meds? No one should go through that. Not even animals. Yes, I am a vegan and I am proud, because I am not a killer. And the fact is, hunting for your meat is still cruel but not as horrid, because its a circle of life. The slaughterhouse mass produce unnaturally, and these animals pay the price. Ann vegans should convince others. Meat is murder. Its true. I have tried to see things from the meat eaters' point of view, but I cant stick my head that far up my ass. So, I would rather be a veggie-head than a murderer. I am damn proud to be a vegan. I am only 15, and I believe I am right.

Why is it ok for animals to viciously kill and eat other animals but, not ok for me to do so? And some of these comments.... really, so it's ok if we make the animal happy before we bash its brains in... huh? That makes it less cruel somehow? I eat meat and I like meat. I have no illusions about it. It is cruel. So is mother nature. That playfulness in kittens and puppies is the instinct that teaches them how to be killers.

I wish you guys could contrast a vegetarians argument without swearing so much. If you feel so strongly about eating meat, you should try to speak your mind without getting so heated. Be open minded. Try being a vegetarian for one day. No meat for 24 hours can't be that bad can it? I haven't eaten meat in almost two years, so I'm very sure you can last only 24 hours. Eating chicken and fish is not vegetarian. You're still killing animals. Sure, it might be less animals, but nonetheless, you are killing them. I should probably quit eating eggs, but it is probably the hardest thing for me. Eggs are in many of the foods i eat. I don't drink milk, I choose soy. In a PETA pamphlet i received, it says, "Dairy cows have electric machines hooked up to their huge, swollen udders, causing cuts and injuries-and the resulting pus, blood, and scabs all end up in that milk mustache." That right there, made me cringe at the thought of milk. =D

For anyone on here wondering why vegans do it, I recomend the Meet your Meat video ("http://www.goveg.com/factoryFarming.asp") ... it is slightly graphic however. It's undercover video from real farms and slaughter houses exposing the truth about what is realy behind your hamburger. I'm a vegitarian and was considering becoming vegan, now it's a definate.

I quit on meat one month ago but I cannot stop eating dairy and eggs. I am doing a detox diet every month for 7-10 days. I was wondering whether eating only fish and chicken (not every day of course) makes you vegetarian.
