Along with Spring break quickly approaching, there is also another highly anticipated event for most High school students. Can you guess what that event is? I'll give you a few hints, it's involves a sparkly venue, a date and a pretty gown or tux. Give up? It's Prom Time!

Growing up in the Bronx, New York I was part of the co-op program where I worked every other week, so I had more ties through work than through High School during my senior year, so I missed my prom. At the time I didn't much care, but when I see young people today getting all dolled up for their special night, I start feeling a little regretful.

I recall my sister's prom and how lovely she looked in her long gown and not to mention the very handsome date on her arm. I remember my parents preparing a nice little intimate party at home for after the prom. It was a great time of fellowship, friendship and the food was fantastic!

Today, I am going to give you a few tips on shopping for your prom gown this year. These tips will save you some time, money and frustration.

1. Plan Ahead - If you are interested in having your gown or dress custom made, make sure you plan 3 to 6 months in advance. I have heard prom nightmares where people received their gown the night before the prom and it was a disaster. If you plan ahead you greatly reduce the margin for error. If you're shopping for a gown or dress off the rack, take your time and pick a color that compliments your complexion and your body shape.

2. Shop Off Season - Proms can be very expensive when you consider the cost of the dress, the shoes, the accessories and even the car rental should you choose to do so. Most department stores and boutiques have specials on gown out of season. For instance you can shop for a prom dress in the summer after the prom season or around the Thanksgiving and Christmas Holidays. If you shop off season, you may be able to save up to 65-70% off of regular retail prices.
