Even though it's still right near freezing for most of the country, and I can look out my windows and see snow, this is my favorite time of the year. All around the rest of the country, roses are bloo
ming, people are working, dreams are being realized for hundreds of people around the world. Everyone is looking forward to May 5th and the singing of "My Old Kentucky Home." Indeed, as of this weekend, the 2007 Kentucky Derby season is officially underway!

Some of the top contenders are already starting to emerge from the largest entry pool in the history of the Kentucky Derby. And of course, for fans and gamblers alike, it's never too early to start analyzing the competition. Since a few of the big names for this year have already run their first, or even second prep race, we can begin to pick out our favorites immediately!

The Holy Bull (Gr.3) really kicked off the derby season properly. Nobiz like Shobiz, the early Derby favorite ran a magnificent race and really showed us his potential. Last year's Derby champion, Barbaro, also won this race. It seems like Nobiz is going to take the Florida Derby route to the Derby, although he'll be facing some stiff competition from Stormello, Any Given Saturday, and the fast closing second place horse in the Holy Bull, Drums of Thunder. This horse reminds me of Steppenwolfer from last year, a horse with a strong closing kick that will probably end up being a second tier horse at best. The third place horse, Scat Daddy, was tiring at the end of the race, and may be destined to skip the Derby and opt for sprint and mile distances.
