Issues to Consider as You Approach Middle Age

As we prepare for retirement, there are many aspects of our lives that we must begin to face with true criticism. Issues such as where we want to live when we retire, what activities we want to be involved in, and even what our predominant method of transportation will be. For many middle age adults
, these issues are usually not at the forefront of our financial planning and retirement plans early in adult life.

Planning early for the variety of issues to be faced at retirement will work to alleviate some degree of stress as we age and enter into our late adult years when focus on financial investments become more crucial.

To prepare for retirement, we should first look at methods to simply our lives and cut back on purchasing additional tangible items without purging old tangible items. In other words, do not buy something new unless there is something old to be discarded. To discard these items, consider have a garage sale at least twice a year to purge unnecessary items from the home.

In addition to purging old items and limiting new purchases, we can begin to prepare for retirement through our careful consideration in vehicle purchases. As retirement eases upon us, use of a car becomes less necessary as transportation to and from work is not as regular. In fact, as middle age approaches, many individuals begin to consider using older cars, consider leasing and even limit the use of vehicles to one. In doing so, costs associated with maintenance, wear and tear and even auto insurance premiums are reduced thereby allowing for additional financial savings for retirement.

Beyond purging old items and limiting vehicle choices, as we begin to approach retirement, we should look at issues which will impact our living arrangements. For many homeowners, when the children head off to college, the realization sets in that large space may not be necessary. With that possibility, as we approach middle age, we should begin to assess where we plan to make our retirement living and work to progress to that living arrangement well before retirement. In doing so, additional issues with regard to selling and buy real estate can be averted.
