Using Natural Alternatives

Every year, veterinary clinics examine and diagnosis a significant number of domestic animals with afflictions that may be not only preventable, but also treatable with h
ome remedies. For dog owners, finding unique alternative medicine approaches, in treating a dog's ailment, may provide for significant cost savings as well as create a more healthy approach to daily living and prevent future disease from occurring.

One such condition, gastrointestinal parasites, such as worms, both tapeworms and heartworms, are quite common in dogs, even those who are fed the best of foods. As a dog owner, there are a variety of home products which can be considered to alleviate and remedy the parasite infection in your family pet.

At your local health food store, a product known as wheat germ oil can be purchased. Mixing wheat germ oil into the dog's food, using approximately ½ teaspoon for each 10 pounds of body weight, over three to four weeks, will provide some relief for gastrointestinal parasitic infections.

In addition to wheat germ oil, dog owners may consider using pumpkin seeds as a natural alternative to medications in treating parasitic infections in the family dog. Using only fresh, raw pumpkin seeds, the dog, as with wheat germ oil, should be given ½ teaspoon for every 10 pounds of body weight.

Beyond wheat germ oil and pumpkin seeds, many dog owners also use diatomaceous earth (food-grade) to treat, and even prevent, parasitic infections in the family dog. While diatomaceous earth can be purchased in a variety of strengths, it is recommended that only food-grade be and, when administered, used sparingly with the dog's food, mixing only one teaspoon for every 25 pounds of the dogs weight. In doing so, the parasitic infection can be remedied and even prevented in many cases.

  • Before using natural healing methods on your dog, consult a veterinarian
  • Pumpkin seeds, fed to the dog over several weeks, can remedy some forms of parasitic infections
  • To prevent parasite infections in your dog, feed him food-grade diatomaceous earth.
