Who knew Toby Keith could act? If you call playing a country singer in his movie "Broken Bridges" acting. But still, who knew? All right, he is by no means a brilliant actor. He is stiff and basically one note, but still it takes a lot of guts to even try something as difficult as acting. He tried a
nd I applaud him for that.

"Broken Bridges" is not a half-bad movie either. I certainly wouldn't call it a great movie, but it is not a bad one. It is the story of two young lovers, growing up in a small rural Georgia town, who believed they were meant to be together. However, when the time came to actually make the leap, the man bails and leaves the girl alone and pregnant. Broken hearted and dejected, the girl leaves her hometown and her dysfunctional family presumably forever.

Kelly Preston plays Angela Dalton, or Angel as her friends affectionately know her. Now living in Miami, Angel has a pretty good job, a decent home for her teenage daughter, and a lonely, empty existence. She fills the days with routine and fights with her daughter who, as with most teenage daughters, wants to be treated as a grownup before she's earned the right.

Angel decides it is finally time to go back home once she receives word that her brother as well as her ex-boyfriend's brother have both been killed in an Army training accident. She drags her daughter Dixie, played by Lindsey Haun, with her kicking and screaming. It is the first time that Dixie meets her grandparents; the grandmother after whom she was named, played by Tess Harper, and a cold, closed off grandfather, played by Burt Reynolds.

At first neither Angel nor Dixie are glad to be in Georgia, particularly when they discover that Dixie's father Bo Price (played by Toby Keith) is also there. However, slowly but surely the three find a way to co-exist and eventually even manage to become friendly.

  • "Broken Bridges" is not a bad film.
  • Lindsey Haun is a major revelation.
  • Unfortunately, the screenplay doesn't give the actors much to work with.
