If you want to be a writer, you have many steps you must take. A non-writer probably thinks the art and craft of writing is easy. You just put your words onto paper and you cash a check. But those of us w
ho are actively trying to be a part of this growing industry knows it isn't that easy.
First, you must know how to write. What kind of writing really doesn't matter. You just need to have some capability as a writer.
Then you must know a little bit about how the business works and you must know what is expected of you.
One thing that you will be expected to do is write a query letter? If you are asking what is this, you must be new to the business or just don't know the key terms, yet.
A query letter is what is called a cover letter in many other fields. Remember back in school many of us were taught to send nice cover letters along with our resumes when we were applying for a job via mail. This is essentially what a querry letter is to a writer.
A query letter is a brief letter that is sent along with a writing proposal, whether it is intended for a publisher or an agent to read. This letter is a representive of our work. For this reason, this letter is important.
But don't fear, query letters are not that complicated to write. Just take a deep breath and follow this guidelines.
1. Keep it short. Never allow your query letter to stray over one page.
2. Make sure it is perfectly written. It should be written in a formal business style. Know exactly who you want to read it. Never send it to whom it may concern, Dear Sir, etc. If you don't know the name of the editor or publisher's assistant who will be reading it, call their office and ask or check online to see if you can find out more about the company online.
3. The first two paragraphs should give the reader a brief introduction to your manuscript or story. Tell what the key parts are. Explain any struggles that the main characters are facing.
4. The next paragraph should tell the reader a little bit about yourself, professionally. Do you have any previous writing credits, especially credits similar to this one. Have you ever been published in the past, if so, where? Did you attend any writing schools, etc.
